I saw this thing on the internet where apparently at this one university (forgot which one), there was a "night of catharsis" near the end of the semester. Students would go into a certain courtyard on campus and scream their lungs out at whatever was stressing them out (usually academic stressors like final exams or major projects or term papers). Some instruments on planes used to be susceptible to interference with mobile phone signals but nowadays I think the major issue is that they can get static feedback on the cockpit voice recorder (black box). However, I've yet to hear of a plane crash caused by phone signals. The amount of redundancy built into modern planes is astounding, a lot of the systems have fail safes etc. I watch too much Air Crash Investigations lol.

So about your question about airplane mode: Back when phones were invented, there were concerns that the radio waves would interfere with electronics. That was never proven to be the case though. What does/did happen though is that the channels between pilots and tower get disturbed - not much, like some small skips or some slight noise, like a slightly bad bluetooth connection. And even that happens less and less often the more modern a plane is. Another thing this is related to is how far up front you sit - or how close to the antenna you are. In the very back of the plane, it probably doesnt matter at all if you turn airplane mode on or off. It also seems like if you actually are on a call those interferences are worse. Another reason you migth want to turn on your airplane mode is pretty simple. Your phone searches for a connection if you allow it to. Normally this is no issue, but if you move at 800km/h it is an issue - for your battery life. It may keep connecting and disconnecting and that will drain your battery since it keeps scanning for stuff. But tbh its probably worse to leave your wifi on if you dont need it sooo not all that big of a deal. All in all, as long as you dont call someone in business class during landing/takeoff, it probably doesnt matter. Just turn it off if you want and they ask you to, and if you forget or they dont ask you to, who cares. I am an electrical engineer and I can tell you as much, there should literally be no issue with modern technology since you can actually filter out frequencies like the ones your phone uses pretty well. But no plane did or ever will crash solely because someone forgot to turn on airplane mode.

Hey Kris, I think we're asked to put phones on aeroplane mode not necessarily to prevent interference, since most new aircraft are shielded against that, but mostly so our phones don't go crazy while searching for service at high altitude where they could not find anything. That would make them overheat and could cause some phones to fail spectacularly. So all in all to prevent an unintended firework show aboard.

Pretty much. It’s a relic of the early days of widely used consumer portable electronics when people realised that they “might” interfere with some systems on aircraft. The easiest way to deal with it while companies worked on better protecting those systems was to ask people not to use their devices, which led to portable device manufacturers adding an ‘airplane’ mode to ensure their consumers could still use their devices on planes. In reality they never really interfered that much and it was more that aircraft companies at the time wanted to be safe.

Any overheating would be because of shitty design and not a lack of service, that shit happens on the ground all the time in remote places. It might drain the battery rather fast, but that's not that different from when you have a bad signal on the ground. Playing offline games on your phone is just as much of a fire hazard than having it constantly searching for service, depending on the game of course. You're not banned from using your phone, any RF transceivers should just be turned off, hence you put it in airplane/offline mode. There's nothing special about that mode, it just turns off any radio devices on your phones. However, you can enable bluetooth and use wireless headsets and such. Some airlines allows for bluetooth usage throughout the entire flight, some requires you to turn it off during takeoff and landing. There is a theoretical risk of interference as you cannot control and verify all devices and some - now very old - devices could potentially interfere with the planes navigation and communication systems, but it's unlikely, even with 90's technology. The fact that you're allowed to use bluetooth shows that they aren't as afraid of RF signals as they once were. The biggest reason to ban calls is to avoid an entire cabin talking on their phones, ignoring important messages and most likely just annoying the passengers around you. And considering the potential for interference, regardless of how irrelevant that would be today, that's the easiest way to keep the majority of passengers from talking on their phone.

Scholastic was the best in grade school and middle school i absolutely love getting scholastic books. i would always get science ones and about the human body. I was obsessed with medical shows growing up and always wanted to be a doctor/surgeon ...... well i didn't make it there though lmfao . I also love the little gadgets that came with the scholastic book fair

8:55 Hi Kris, There are several reasons why passengers are required to switch to Airplane mode or turn OFF their electronic communication devices. In earlier days, the radio waves from cell phones would interfere with the aircraft's systems, mainly with the radios that are used for ATC communication, and that's why the 'turn OFF your electronics' rule was introduced. . But as the years went by, new technologies emerged, and the avionics improved as well, so if someone doesn't put their smartphones in Flight Mode, it won't cause any issues to the aircraft or the flight. (This is for all general devices and cell phones; I'm not talking about the '5G C-Band' issue here) . That said, it is still a good practice to switch to Airplane Mode while you're in the aircraft, and it mainly has to do with your cell phone's battery consumption. The way cell phones work is they communicate with the cell towers to provide service. So when your cell phone doesn't get any service, it isn't able to communicate with a cell tower, and it keeps searching for a signal which consumes more power, thus draining the battery faster. Now, while you're on the ground, your phone will receive service, but once you're in the air, above a certain altitude, your phone would stop getting service, and it would keep searching for a signal for the entire flight, thus draining the battery. . Also, while you're close to the ground, just after take-off and before landing, your phone will get service from the cell towers but as the aircraft is moving fast, your phone will be rapidly switching to new cell towers as the aircraft flies ahead and that puts a strain on your phone as well as on the telecom backbone. . Apart from this reason, there are other speculated reasons such as, passengers would pay attention to the flight crew while they're giving the safety briefing if they aren't using their phones, etc. . Hi, @@BatCat707 To answer your question, the drainage of batteries has nothing to do with the airplane or any other flight functionalities. It will not disrupt your flight or any other communications equipment because the frequency range used by the aviation sector is different than that of the telecom sector. I just wanted to share some legit reasons as to why it would be beneficial to us to switch OFF the smartphones or at the very least put them in Airplane mode while flying.
