This is not a 'Devil Song' as Titled, Its a christian Tonga melody describing the story of how Adam and Eve were deceived by the devil and how they soon realized they had been deceived. It further describes the conversation between God and Adam, and between Eve and Adam. The title Devil song throws the song out of context.

The title 'Tulumbe Mwami' is the title given by the composer Enock Mbongwe Haciwa to his song. The translation 'Devil Song' is what the BBC put there, but it was Enock who gave it to them, as he felt it describes what his song is about. And we have to respect the composer! The melody is not at all 'Christian' but traditional uses a traditional Tonga scale. There is no such thing as a 'Christian' melody played on kalumbu. The story told obviously comes from the bible, and it is about the devil.

The Title Tulumbe Mwami translates' Lets Praise God' perhaps the performer did not understand the implications of the title Devil Song. The context of the song is christian in that it tells a Bible story of how sin was first committed, the melody is indeed Tonga based on the traditional character of singing and Tonga modes( I should not have called it christian melody). But African music serves various contexts and functions, and thus this song(today) serves a Christian purpose even though sung in a Tonga manner. For one who understands the language, the story is about the origins of sin, and the conversations between the devil and Adam, Eve and eventually God and Adam. The composer may have called it The Devil Song(Yes) but that's rather not representative of the lyrics and context. However, i will respect the composers choice of the title. Thanks for posting the Video I was researching on the Kalumbu and Berimbau of brazil

This not a "Devil song" as most of African oral tradition things get lost in translation- The singer is reciting events...not telling the "devil's" narrative. Please correct this!

See my reply to Alex Mwesa's comment. The main figure in the story he sings about is the devil, plus the clip is from the BBC tv broadcast and 'Devil Song' is their title after Mbongwe's explanation of his song entitled 'Tulumbe Mwami' ('Let us praise God').

Well... It's different, but wouldn't call it interesting. And definitely not something for a concert hall.
