In 1576, Burbage acquired a lease for a plot of land in Shoreditch, London, and constructed The Theatre on that site. It was a polygonal-shaped building with three tiers of galleries surrounding an open yard where the stage was located. The Theatre became the home of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, an acting company that included famous playwright William Shakespeare among its members.
