Cry, The Peacock is the first novel by Anita Desai. It was published in the year 1963. The novels dwells deep into the psychology and superstition of an individual. Maya, the protagonist and the antagonist of the novel is a very sensitive, young girl. She is married to Gautama, whom she feels does not understand her feelings. Moreover, Maya is haunted by a childhood prophecy, which, if it comes true will end either her life or her husband's.
