Papananasam overdid things. In Malayalam version, Georgekutty is the type of character who hides his emotions inside. It is his emotional strength that allowed his family to survive the difficult situation. Georgekutty and his family don't feel guilty about what happened to the boy. But they do feel sad about his innocent parents. In Tamil version, Suyambulingam (Kamal) and his family feel guilty about what they did to the boy and they are very emotional characters. Kamal's emotional family with such strong guilt feeling won't be available to survive the attacks of Perumal (Mani). In drishyam, the truth is hidden till the end. Varun's family understood they won't get more info from georgekutty. but in papanasam kamal becomes emotional and reveals the truth. So the next question arised is where is the body. The whole movie doesn't make correct sense at the end. The hero has good knowledge about how the police can change according to the situation to get the truth out. in papanasam it fails. In Drishyam, the hero decided that the truth will be buried with him. So he just followed it till the end.

Unlike Original Drishyam, Kamal's demands made Suyambulingam and his family far more emotional which altered the essence of the story. Another important change was the change made in the climax of Papanasam where Kamal becomes emotional and reveals the truth to Varun's parents about what happened and acknowledges that the crime happened. Kamal should have stayed faithful to the the story instead of changing it for commercial reasons.

@@josephpendleton4927 Kamal can only act for Tamil audience. Not for malalayam audience. We tamil audience dont watch emotionless films. The change in the script is the thing which made us to watch the movie with correct emotional crisps. And moreover the role he playing is suyambulingam from nellai district of tamilnadu. Kamal have done 100% justice to the character. Because even if now you go and stay in thirunelvali for a week you can witness lots of suyambulingams there. Because that's how ppl exactly behave there . Director have to change script for audience acceptance. We tamil audience are not used to emotions less films. In my opinion both mohanlal and kamal have done 100% to their roles. You can't expect same kinda character and acting in every language. It's being taken for a particular community. Then it will obviously have reflection of that community only.

I would call kamal as a method actor. He studies and prepares himself to become the character.

Balu mahendra, the director of Moondram pirai (1982) said in an Interview in 1989 for podhigai(doordarshan at that time). that Kamal was given the script of Moondram pirai in Chennai and within an hour he arranged for the producers at Sathya jyothi films and they went for shoot the very next day. Also the iconic climax scene in the film which is considered one of the best performances ever in Indian cinema history was took in a single take without rehearsals. The scene was narrated and the next minute Kamal asked for take. That single scene got him ahead of his competitors for the national award by light years and he got the award. So he doesn't prepare or studies a character deeply. It comes as naturally for him. Infact according to Kamal the longest he has took to prepare for a character was Kalathur Kannama and that too because he worked in the film as a child artist and preparations were given for the kids. So yeah he's not much of a method actor after all.
