Actually, including the very simplified and feature-light version of the character figure makes a lot of sense when you realize that it was intended to be kept inside the watermelon most of the time, rather than being played with on its own. (Basically, if you want to play with the character along...you get the better version by itself).

You had gyro mode mistransformed. You were supposed to leave the legs out halfway, with the feet folded so that theytouch the ground. That solves the problem with the heavyness of the weapon. You also had to have the fingers pointing fowards to serve as guns.

There's not a giant robot fight tacked onto the end of each episode, so all of that budget goes into the humanoid costumes instead. Also, the writing is, at least in my opinion, a lot tighter and more focused, to the point where I would say the best seasons cross the line into genuine drama as opposed to just being a toy commercial, especially in the earlier series where the commercial elements were really downplayed and more in service of the story. Even today though, in this new, post-2009 era we have series like Gaim and Drive and most recently Ex-Aid as well which play up the commercial elements but completely make them work in the context of the show's story. They're really enjoyable actually, and I'd recommend giving them a watch if you haven't already. Series like W, OOO, and Drive especially are good for beginners as they are generally light-hearted but dive into more mature plotlines later on. After that, I would recommend delving into the darker stuff like Agito, Blade, Gaim, Ryuki, etc.
