IMHO one of the best war movies ever made is the Japanese movie The Eternal Zero, about a fighter pilot who just wanted to survive the war for his wife and child, but eventually became a kamikaze pilot. It's very moving. There is also a good short 3 episode mini-series version, but I think the movie version is better. They're available with English subtitles.

I'm Japanese. My great-grandfather was a special assault force and was killed in action off the coast of Okinawa. You probably think that a large number of young people in the Special Attack Force were willing to give their lives. However, it's actually different. They also had family, important people, and friends. Nobody wanted to die on their own. I still had to die. To protect the people I love

Im proud to say that my grandfather ELMER DONALD BUGGE was in the midst of one of these kamikaze raids. He was an airplane mechanic aboard the U.S.S. SANTEE and was hit by kamikaze then directly afterwards torpedo in the sude of the ship. He said the inly reason they didnt sink was beause the captain wasbsmart enough to flood the entire bottom of the carrier then closed and sealed the air tight doors and that leveled the ship out. He recieved a purple heart and up to the day he passed away he carried shrapnel in his body from head to toe. He is and always was my hero. Rest ur soul grandpa bugge we luv u. I will post a couple pics of his ship as well as a pic of him. It amazed me anyone could live through that crap.

My dad served in WWII in the Pacific. He was on the Uss Vicksburg. It was hit by Japanese bombers and almost hit by 2 Kamikazes. In the battle in either Sipan or Okinawa the Japanese were sneaking in troops in thier red cross boats. They were going in heavy and coming out light. They sent a shell going in over the bow and 15 soldiers jumped and tried to swim away. It was filled with guns and ammo. I have the rifle he captured. It still has all the Japanese seals that were to be removed. Its priceless to me..I also have a 40mm ? Shell casing that he used to fire at Japanese aircraft. It's on my office desk.

Thanks to men like your father, humanity was able to breathe, to live in a freer world. I say freer because there was already communism that spread throughout Europe. Today we face the neo-communist threat, I say new because they disguise themselves as democrats because they come to power through elections but in reality they are communists. Ambition has blinded many businessmen who have set up their factories, warehouses in countries that have always wanted to see this country destroyed. Now those enemies of this country, that those businessmen filled with wealth and knowledge, are powerful, they launch rockets at the moon, they have nuclear weapons, they are a threat to the free world. You cannot sell your soul to the devil for money because he will turn against you sooner rather than later.

Then the dual and quad 40MM Bofors. Now things are getting serious. But when they could heard the 20mm Oerlikons fire, then they knew the Kamikazes were danger close, and it was white knuckle time.

My great grand father volunteered as A Kamikaze pilot and died to rescue Okinawa in 1945, maneuvering zero fighter into US fleet. It's unclear he successfully hit US carrier or unfortunately shot down before attaking. However, he had sent his daughter, who is my mother a bunch of lovely letters, reading he worried for the daugter and his wife after his death how they could live in the post war period. All Kamikaze pilots perfectly knew there was no chance for Japan to win the war. They died for the Japanese honor and left families to let White Western countries people know the fact there were non-White human who really realize noble obligations and courage to sacrifice themselves for whom they love and beloved Nation.

The following is a letter left by a father who died in the Kamikaze Special Attack Force to his children. Lieutenant Colonel Masanobu Kuno had two children, a five-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter. He must have been envisioning his son's future sunny days and his daughter's marriage. And he must have been happy. Masanobu Kuno was killed in action on May 24, 1945, when he took off aboard a Type 97 heavy bomber. He was 29 years old. ------------- To Masanori and Kiyoko My father may not be able to see you, but he is always watching you. I want you to follow your mother's instructions and not worry her. And when you grow up, you should follow your own path and become a good Japanese. Don't envy other people's fathers. Masanori's and Kiyoko's fathers are watching them closely as if they were gods. You two get along well, study hard, and help your mother with her work. Your father can't be a horse for Masanori and Kiyoko and give them piggyback rides, but I want you two to get along. Your father is an energetic man who rode a big heavy bomb and killed all of his enemies, so please avenge him by becoming someone who is as strong as your father. "A struggle between men who want to die and men who fight to live." What nonsense! Kamikaze pilots did not "want to die". They had families too. Many of them were reluctantly forced into the role. On May 28, 1950, Fujii boarded a plane piloted by Ensign Akira Ogawa as a communications officer. As the commander of the 45th Bombardment Group of the Army Special Attack Force, he sent the message, "I am going in," and scattered into the sea of Okinawa with ten other suicide attackers. This was five months after the death of his wife and two young daughters, and only two and a half months before the end of the war. Lieutenant Fujii was 29 years old, and his rank at the time of his death was Major. On his sortie, Fujii wrote a letter to his two daughters, who were too young to have passed away before him. A cold December day with a raging wind The dew on the riverbank of the Arakawa River and the extinguished life. In accordance with the will of my father, who, along with my mother, was burning with the blood of martyrdom, and who sacrificed himself to my father one step ahead of me, it is pitifully sad, and yet I am as happy as if I were laughing, and I pity the young life that disappeared with my mother. My father will soon be able to follow in your footsteps. Don't be afraid to sit on my father's lap this time and lie down to sleep Until then, please don't cry and wait for me. If Chieko cries, protect her well. Goodbye for now. Father is going to make a great achievement in the war and bring it back as a souvenir. Now, Kazuko-chan and Chieko-chan, please wait until then.

Too much flak from our own gunners to risk our fighter cover over our ships; same reason the Germans did not put fighters into the fray when we did our bombing runs, the risk of being shot down by their own AA battery was too great. @@peepaw_of_9 the Japanese had no choice but to escape the economic blockade imposed by the jealous Allies. Jealous because they can't accept an Asian power who are equal to them. The Japanese attacked first as expected, and planned by the Americans. A similar situation is happening right now in Europe and Asia. The West are waiting for Russia and China to fall for the trap and make the mistake the Japanese did. Should war break out, it won't be regional this time - its going to be global. Better, yet, making Japan the victim because we dared to fight back . How intolerable! How insolent of us Yellow Yankee Dog snot to play the cowardly antagonist according to their Kabuki script. No, the Japanese Military cabal and the Emperor who stood by to let them commit Japan to national suicide WERE CRAZY with their obsession to rule the Pacific and East Asia, and angry that the US dared put an oil embargo becasue Japan was murdering Chinese in China. @@emansnas in the great 'Bodenplatte' operation of January 1st, 1945 by Luftwaffe against a dozen of Allied-held airfields in France and Low Countries, many of the catastrophic losses (against the relative damage they inflicted) taken by the Germans were by the US and British batteries of Bofors 40 mm. guns placed around the said airfields. Those Spitfires and Tempests (and, P-47 from the US bases) that already were airborne by early morning were able to intercept many attackers, yet many others met their end 'cause of the Allied tactical flak. There are many witnesses from pilots and gunners alike being present there.

@@francescofissore161 Ah... that's very specific, and in retrospect makes sense. Thank you for that. I remember reading about an incident during that operation but don't recollect anything re the flack. If memory serves, during that operation at one of the bases, there was a flight of returning P-51s that intercepted attackers as they were leaving. One German pilot, by exercising all his flying skills, managed to evade four of them and position himself at a sufficient distance where his escape seemed imminent... only to be brought to his end by a fifth unnoticed late arriving p-51 closing from abeam, with a high deflection shot. Desperate times for German pilots.
