KAMIKOCHI 2024: Walking Around Kamikōchi | Japan Alps - Nagano, Japan【SUMMER】

Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery.
Kamikochi is a roughly 15 kilometer long plateau in the Azusa River Valley, about 1500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by tall mountains, including Nishihotakadake (2909 m), Okuhotakadake (3190 m), Maehotakadake (3090 m) and the active volcano Yakedake (2455 m).
Part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, Kamikochi has only been moderately developed with half a dozen hotels, a few souvenir shops, mountain huts and hiking trails.
🔸Private cars are banned from Kamikochi, and access is only possible by bus or taxi.

I'm sorry it took you so long to respond. 🙏 By the location the most advisable is to go by bus. Alpico operates daytime and overnight highway buses between Tokyo (Tokyo Station, Shinjuku) and Kamikochi. The one way trip takes 5-7 hours and costs around 6000 to 8000 yen. @@hi_japan True, I have watched 8 videos on this region, some in Japanese. Will be ideal to prepare 5 sets of bento and bottled drinks to have food during meal breaks and continue the walk trail. But the hotel room charges are too high which discourage me in staying there. Maybe in 5 years, I will go and experience the walk trails after coming over from yamagata hanagasa matsuri in Aug NN.

What is the best way to get there from Tokyo? Do I need a car rental?

From Tokyo, my recommendation would be to take the bus that has a direct connection to Kamikochi. Alpico operates day and night highway buses between Tokyo (Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya) and Kamikochi. The one-way trip takes 5 to 7 hours and costs around 6,000 to 8,000 yen. Most people go to Kamikochi via public transport as private cars are not allowed to enter Kamikochi. However, you can also travel by car to Sawando parking lot (east side) or Hirayu parking lot (west side), normally it costs 600 to 1,000 yen. From these parking lots you can choose to go by bus (around 2,000 to 2,500 yen return) or taxi (around 4,000 yen). It takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the parking lot.
