Kamon, if you hold the cup with the plunger up, she will crawl up and grab onto the sponge, orienting her the right way for marking. Flip the cup, grid side up once she does that and gently move that plunger to pin her in place.

Good job Kamon! It's nice of you to demonstrate the equipment a new beekeeper would use. I haven't tried to mark a queen myself, but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to see if they supersede her.

Kamon. You should check out the One Handed Queen Catcher from Mann Lake. I'd never marked a queen before getting this tool and starting this season, I've marked dozens of queens and have never hurt one. There's a cheaper version on Amazon but it's inferior so I recommend the Mann Lake tool. I have videos of me marking queens with this tool.

O wow never seen this, so much better than trying to do it by hand.. I have never tried by hand but honestly I don't think I ever would just because its not a big deal to me and I wouldn't want to hurt her, but this looks like a much better alternative!

Great Video Kamon, are you using a colour code system for your queens? Is it by year or brood line? Thanks for the video

Thx for video! Are you able to use a regular (craft?) paint pen or do you have to buy one specifically for bee keeping?

Hi J mom, I would be careful using something I wasn't for sure would be ok to use. However, many pros use model car paint for marking queens. These posca pens can be found at some craft stores and definitely online.

I may be a bit of a drop kick, but here's a good idea i had. Trim the tip of the marker pen into a sharper point. Makes it easier to paint them through the mesh of those cages.

Good info. I have had a hive for right at a year now. I've still never found my queen. I know she's there, the brood is proof. But I cannot find her. Do you have any videos for us "challenged" beekeepers?

Kamon, good job. Would you be willing to mark one of Kathleen’s princess bees for me? I would be happy to pay you of course. I would use her to make a much needed split.

I bought one of those and don't like it. Home made one with a toilet paper tube, wedding veil, a pencil, a piece of builders foam, and some foam insulation tape. Use a 1 5/8" hole saw to cut some circles out of the foam. Glue n stack. The arbor holes fit a pencil. Tape the wedding veil mesh over the end of the tube. I used metal tape. Duct tape would be fine. The home made version is very gentle on queens and is a bit bigger. The veil mesh flexes and you can trap a queen without crushing or making her feint. Once you build one you'll never consider buying one. Way better. If you wanted to be fancy you could use clear plastic tubing.

I have heard of people clipping the queens wings, do you ever do that? I presume the only reason is to prevent her flying off taking a swarm with her?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor I have never done that. It does help beekeepers catch their swarms since the queen can't fly well. I like to keep the bees from swarming in the first place!

I have a marking kit - just can't find the Queens. I hate taking the hives apart just to hunt for a Queen - it seems like too much disruption. Should I just bite the bullet or does it not matter?

When the pen tip doesn't fit well through the grid pressing too hard can be disastrous! The amount of paint that can come out of the pen can be very surprising so please be careful.

why do you wait 8-10 mins before putting back in hive.. is it because you are waiting for paint to dry? how long should I wait before putting her back in hive after painting? thx

I no longer use the plunger system after killing three of my prime queens using it. So easy to damage a leg or squish them just a bit too hard. Delicate creatures, these girls.

Great video. For some reason bee stings in my fingers hurt so bad. I mean unbearable. I would rather slam my fingers in a car door. I'm not sure but I think I have some sort of joint disease in the arthritis family. The sting to my face doesn't hurt ar all and she got me right between the eyes. So I dont know.
