C. Ramachandra was a great music director but a.bad singer. He never preferred Rafi Saab as a singer but there is one beautiful duet in movie Albela with Lata ji , it didn't become popular for whatever reason but its a pleasure to listen to this song. And who will forget Rafi Saab's duet songs of Nausherwan E Adil with Lata ji , under C Ramchandra's music direction. Rafi Saab was ignored by Bengali lobby including Salil Chaudhary, with d exception of our great Sachin Dev Burman. I only listen to old Hindi film & songs of 1940s-1960s . Dilip Kumar sahab is my most favourite actor & Mohammed Rafi sahab is my most favourite singer . I have also heard that C. Ramchandra sahab in an interview that Mohammed Rafi sahab was his favourite singer . He also had a rift with great Lata Mangeshkar'ji & then , he started using Asha Bhosle'ji instead . Rizwan Bhai, Rafi Saheb was a very simple man and a professional to the core. Him losing temper over an MD's dissatisfaction over his rendition of a song is hardly believable. He had very strong work ethics. As you already acknowledged that he always gave his best whether or not he got paid. However, he also strongly believed that the MD deserved to get his money's worth. Therefore, he owed it to the composer to deliver a song that met his expectstions that of the producer as well as the actor. Your thesis about the "lobby" against Rafi Saheb is more than plausible. This is why... I had heard from an insider about a romantic liaison between CR and LM, which ended around 1963. Since LM was not a great fan of Rafi Saheb ( and, this is a gross understatement), C Ramachandra was literary walking on egg-shells. Yes, Talat Mahmood (and MukeshJi, next) was his favorite, but he had nothing against Rafi Saheb except that his love interest was hostile towards Rafi Saheb. Eventually, they had a falling out (not because of Rafi Saheb), and, like the proverb, "There is no greater wrath than the woman scorned," she was hell bent on destroying Chitalkar Saheb. And, she did. She finished off his career much the same way her younger sibling did to OP Nayyar. Chitalkar died quite young ... in his early 60s. Watch a KZbin video of CR's one of the last interviews recorded in London. BTW Anna in the Marashtrian community is an honorific for an elder brother, father or uncle.

There is no denial that C. Ramachandran was not a Rafi fan. He was romantically involved with Lata Mungeshkar and supported her stand on the royalty controversy. It is ironic that when C. Ramachandran was discarded by her and was a broken man towards the end of his life, Rafi Sahib tried to reprieve his career by agreeing to sing for him in some south Indian language (I forget, which).

C ramchandra was very unique person and man of his heart on tongue. Rafi ji was very good singer and rarest of his kind comes in centuries. Such incidences are quite common, as Lata ji said "asaan nahi hota hai, bohot sunna padta hai".
