Sweet facility, not nuts about the housing of the snapping turtles. The babies were in like 3x3 squares and the bigger ones didn't even look like they could turn around in their tubs

derrik tribble Majority of them are not in proper homes. You saw all the turtles in the tiny tubs and cubes. They are not happy. They really only care about money. If they did care they would bond with these turtles. They just ship it off to whoever will dish out money, not really knowing if they are educated pet owners.

I know he's trying to do his best, but I'm just not a fan of factory farming. I can't believe that those turtles and tortoises are living their best lives. They are smart and curious, and they just don't have enough room. I only have 4 Golden Greek tortoises, and their enclosure is bigger than my bedroom and living room put together! I love to see them cruising around and stretching their legs.

I Keep turtles too and im really impressed. Most of the House is really amazing, but in the house with all the waterturtles and snappers inside is just not really good. All turtles need a place to get out of the water and dry and WITH a light or the sun!And the Snappers just dont have any room. Thats a total No Go! But all the rest is really amazing. Its just some of the small ones need more space and Lights!

Living in the bush in Australia i got to grow up caring for some eastern snake necked turtles. 2 were babies that someone fished out of a backyard pond when they were filling it in, the other i had to nurse back to health after it got hit by a lawnmower while hiding in some long grass. They are very good pets. Very friendly and easier to care for than some reptiles.

I agree that some of the tubs are too small, but the longer you are in the hobby or industry, the more you can be flexible on housing and all care aspects as you know where to draw the line between adequate and inadequate husbandry. I am writing this to tell anyone reading that tubs and bins aren’t necessarily inadequate for turtles. Me and my uncles are breeders and we’ve housed juveniles in tubs and bins since 99’. Never had a problem. There is a fine line between keepers and breeders. Keepers emphasise on top notch care, buying everything a caresheet says such as UVB and heat lamps, test kits, conditioners, sand, canister filters, heaters and all those and are also the ones who test their water every week and panic too much when their filters stop functioning or when their turtles eat a goldfish. Breeders on the other hand, simply use outdoor enclosures and let their turtles play in the mud and then house juveniles in bins or tubs. They thrive well under those conditions. Bins and tubs are great for temporary stocking or simply housing the juveniles until they reach over 4”. It is definitely NOT THE BEST WAY to keep turtles, but is sufficient. Lastly, those turtle care nazis often are just keepers with a RES named Sheldon and not a breeder with exotic species and decades of experience up his sleeves.

@@andrewspencer5737 "but the longer you are in the hobby or industry, the more you can be flexible on housing and all care aspects as you know where to draw the line between adequate and inadequate husbandry" That is where so many of the problems come from. Everyone draws their line in a different place. Alot of grey areas. Everyone is an expert and the public doesn't know anything. Ive worked on farms, at a zoo, at rescues ,dog kennels, I currently train sled dogs. The longer I work in animal care the more I think people SHOULD be nazis about animal care. A breeder with decades of experience doesn't have experience in much besides breeding and selling animals. Its like with this sled dog racing BS. Anytime someone wants to talk to an expert musher they speak to an iditarod racer or a touring kennel. Id argue the best mushers who have the care of the dogs being the main concern, would never enter that dumb race. Definitely never WIN the thing. If you have people that are pushing their dogs very hard to win. Breeding, hoarding, and trading dogs out like pokemon. You can't beat that! Unless you are pushing yours just as hard and doing all the same stuff. Oh but they are "working dogs". The inuits werent running their dogs 1000 miles! Thats insane! And neither were the guys during the serum run. Its a modern invention. White settlers saw inuits doing it, then they took it to the extreme. Its a weird perversion of what it was through history when used by native Americans and inuits did it. In general I find the breeding of animals to be very irresponsible. If we had 10 times less breeders we'd still have to many animals. Every rescue basically everywhere is full. When I was at the exotic animal rescue it was mainly bs reptiles that are common in the pet industry. Hundreds of ball pythons, leopard geckos, bearded dragons, iguanas, red-tail boas, burmese pythons. Working at the zoo, people always told me about their pet snake or whatever they used to have. Usually they meet an untimely demise, or have to find another home for it for one reason or another. I could never in good conscience get into the breeding of animals. Theres already plenty of people doing it. Its not really a space that needs more people. Plenty of animals that already need homes. Trust me.

Hi I'm a subscriber originally from Virginia, and kept snakes from 10 to 16. One of the older snake collectors worked with Dr. William Haas from the Miami serpentarium. I still remember an alligator, and some spitting cobras she was bringing to Dr. Haas. While Mrs. Kilby was in Florida she brought me back a Florida Indigo about 3 feet long. The cost was 2 bucks a foot. Pretty good deal! I think you have an incredible place, and I try to apply some of your ideas towards the spaces I make for my rescue parrots. Actually you have many great ideas towards animal husbandry. I live in western Oregon, and took in a rescue Iguana a few years ago that had been in the wild the previous 6 months. About 17 months ago we had a freak snowstorm, and she got frost bite especially around her head. The frost bite changed the color of her skin on the top of her head over her nasal cavity especially. With antibiotics and other drugs Delilah was healing until: In her outside enclosure she found the sharp edge of a lava rock I'd put in there Stupidly I should add I'll never do that again, but she opened up the wound creating about a half by quarter inch opening over her nasal cavity. After taking Delilah to my excellent Vet Dr. Herrera tried closing the wound in various ways attempting to use a small strap under her head to keep a dressing in place to stop the bleeding, but had no success. All the Reptile vets online Dr. Herrera contacted told Dr. Herrera to euthanize Delilah. Then Dr. Herrera remembered that California forest fire burn victims had been treated with a kind of second skin made from some kind of fish. Tillapin? Dr. Herrera had some caradressing at the clinic also like a clear second skin that has a sticky side. The Vet told me she would try the caradressing directly over the wound, and would wait until the next morning to see if Delilah kept the caradressing on overnight. She did. It was a miracle otherwise Dr. Herrera would have euthanized Delilah who originally was given to the Vet after she was returned to her previous owner from the wild. With Critical Care food syringe fed to her including antibiotics, and cleanings Delilah is healing, gaining muscle again alot of weight eating a combination of Zoo Med natural pellets, typical fruits, and vegetables, UVB lighting, and about every other day she gets a Calcium Citrate 630 mg W/Vit. D to help prevent MBD. (Metabolic Bone Disorder) since I can no longer keep her outside because of her wound. Unfortunately Delilah did lose her left eye as a result of her injuries. I still use caradressing putting a new strip over her wound every few days. The total cost since her frost bite, and through the healing of her reinjury was about two thousand dollars. I was lucky to have the money, but if I'd had to scrub out Dr. Herrera's clinic every night to pay the bill Delilah was is worth it to me. I was fortunate also to have a vet that thought a bit differently than the 5 or so herp specialists she consulted online all of which would have put Delilah down if Delilah had been in their care. Sometimes there is another way than euthanizing an animal. I can't know for certain, but through it all the thing that Delilah seemed to hate the most was when I had to clean her wound. These days Delilah spends her time in a large space in our kitchen chilling out on her at low temp. With a towel over it heating pad under her UVB light. She also likes her baths every few days after I remove her old caradressing. Having water roll over her open nasal cavity doesn't seem to bother her. If you're interested in seeing more of what we did to restore Delilah's I documented her care including pictures of Delilah from the beginning up until now.
