Found my Gator Snapper in the BIG POND!

The big pond at Kamp Kenan is so low right now that it is a great time to get in there and find the gigantic alligator snapping turtle that is hiding in there!

Wow, that pond is wayyy deeper than I expected! Those are extremely happy turtles to have that area. I am curious if the snappers will breed. Just fascinating! Their eggs seem like they would be a really good size.

I’m surprised there’s no naturally occurring foliage (water plants; waterlilies, water hyacinth, reeds, cattails, etc) in that pond. I don’t recall there ever being any, even before the turtles were added, I wonder why, it is Florida, after all. 🤔

Oklahoma also has Gator Snappers! They are what got me into reptiles as a small like 6 year old and 20 years later still love them and have found so many reptiles to love

I love turtles, but my favorite animal is the rhinoceros but my favorite reptile is definitely the alligator. It’s just so awesome and big. I went to Florida a couple times and I’ve seen gators in the wild. They’re just so awesome and I like them. I don’t have any pets at home, but I am hoping to get a bearded dragon when I turn 11

Probably cost a bit to start with Kenan but have you ever considered putting a low (around 6ft high) concrete wall inside your perimeter against the wire fence as a visual barrier to stop those dogs barking at you all time. May be worth considering. May act as a sound barrier to them as well. Dogs are normally visual and noise stimulated.

A start would be adding some water hyacinth. Floating plants are a good interface between air & water and the roots help clear up the dissolved waste. That stuff grows wild down there and it spreads like crazy. Boat loads can be collected for free so if it gets eaten no big deal.
