It's not a mystery. It's a downright "the author forgot" moment. Like Rokume, the imagination chimeras, the gang that was after Melon, Sebun's entire plotline, melon's dad, dogs being bred to rule the world, and so on.
@Alondro773 жыл бұрын
Yep. It's the simplest explanation that's usually the correct one. It's why the best authors outline their core story before they write a single page of actual narrative. It's just too easy to lose track of things. And it is a shame Rokume was forgotten. She was fascinating in just that brief appearance. Having a more bestial group of animals, like snakes, lurking in the shadows of the world would've been really interesting to explore. And given how impossibly huge she was, perhaps THEY could've been the 'divinities' moving things in the world. She would've been the initial introduction to them, given how she clearly was studying Legoshi and even suggested he was something special, which easily could've been worked into a concept that serpents were the ones 'slithering' behind the scenes and keeping the peace by choosing those who exhibited the right traits.

Ehhhhhh.... ehhhhhhh.... sorry to say, it wouldn't work this way AT ALL. I'm a developmental geneticist, and there's no way in hell the "Beastars" world could form naturally. First and foremost, cross-species fertility is TOTAL BS between radically-diverged species. Evolution is RANDOM. It involved not simply point mutations, but huge frameshifts and translocations, and duplications in the genome. For instance, a Komodo dragon and wolf could NEVER have a child. EVER. Not only is their basic reproductive biology absurdly incompatible, but their chromosomal number and centromeric arrangement is so different that not even a zygote could form. The chromosomes would never align and even if you directly injected the haploid genome of the sperm of one into the ovum of the other, the resulting cell would swiftly die. And yes, this sort of thing has been experimentally tested and verified multiple times. Even species that are closely related rarely can have offspring, any the results are often sterile, such as with mules. Basically, an artificial origin is the only way the "Beastars" world could ever take place. Natural evolution could never lead to it. The odds of such outrageously convergent evolution simultaneously is staggeringly impossible to achieve. I put it at lower than the odds of winning every lottery on Earth with just one ticket purchased for each.

I think Beastars dealed with Black Alley Market too lightly. I doubt that every carnivore who visited this place easily accepted the fact that it was going to get closed for good. @PlanetZoidstar3 жыл бұрын
I think the Japanese-inspired culture had something to do with it. Japanese society strongly discouraged confrontation or conflict, from a young age many Japanese are taught to stay in their lane, don't complain, and conform. They have a saying "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down", so while many may protest the closure of the Black Market, unless they unified they may all individually feel too helpless to decide each on their own they will protest or complain.

I love Beastars and everything about the manga,it's just Paru suffers from the same mistake that Masashi Kishimoto delt with when writing Naruto he was to ambitious establishing a whole lot of characters with interesting motives and well developed personalities it's just there not developed enough for us the audience to really invest and actually care for the characters
@PlanetZoidstar3 жыл бұрын
That and introducing way too many characters, more than she could comfortably develop. She created Pina largely out of the desire to add some levity to the second arc, which took focus away from other characters that could have used the fleshing out. No plot-relevant character should be created on a whim just because. And in regards to that arc *Season 2 SPOILERS* I think making Riz the killer was a mistake. He was a non-entity in Season 1, so there was no way for the audience to guess who the killer was until he revealed himself. That and Legosi susses out it's him offscreen. Like somehow Bill learned Louis came from the black market. He just knows for no reason we are shown. Alot of major events aren't shown happening in real-time and alot of important characters (like Haru and Juno) get shoved into the background when Paru doesn't know how to properly work them into the arc she's writing. I feel her biggest weakness, as you pointed out, was being too ambitious for the story she wanted to tell. She had great ideas, concepts and characters, but she got carried away adding in more characters and not making the most of the cast she had set up in Season 1.

@@johnny2x47 If that's true then it really sucks. I could believe it being the case because Paru is an amazing writer when she's not being held back. Hopefully the anime can fix the mistakes of the manga now they have the complete story and can adapt the story without the constraint of not knowing how it's going to turn out (like when an anime catches up to the manga) I'm only up to Volume 10 of the manga (when Juno has her meeting with Haru and they talk at the Garden club) and so far it really bugged me what a non-entity Haru has been in the Murderer Arc. Given how important she was in the Meteor Festival Arc I was really disappointed how minor her appearances in the Murderer arc were. I know why Legosi is avoiding her but it felt contrived he didn't try to tell her WHAT he was doing. Or why he needed "to protect her from a distance." That and how quickly Juno gave up on trying to become the next Beastar....Because she acknowledged Haru was cute and she couldn't compete with that? It seems out of character that Juno would throw in the towel so easily when she's so popular, clever and charismatic and she already scored the Adler role without really trying. And she was a favourite to be considered in the running for the Beastar position. What it took Louis 3 years to achieve she managed in only 1, if that.

How about this Pangea Ultima still exist but the Metor caused a significant rise in sea levels. Any remaining dinosaurs evolve into carnivores and Herbivours(when it comes to skin it goes slime,carapace, smoth/squishy skin,Scales,Reptilian Hides then splits into Fur first and after that Feathers. Animals evolve into way crazier shit anyway so a semi inteligent species of dinosaur going that route wouldn't surprise me) So this Ultra-Mega metrotroplis(giant city) that covers most of the remaining Super land mass. So thats how I viewed it, as Legosi didn't explore most of the City. Because when the back ally market was stopped it was the biggest one on the remaining Landmass. The smaller ones that smuggled other meats from morges and allowed animals that couldn't exist in the main ones warm climate needed to exist put into circulation before they caused a genocide in Northern regions. This is event probably caused the more strict laws against carnivores, also why more small northern species aren't as present or are rarer than southern animals. This is why the whale said there society wasn't too advanced.(honestly the whale and multiple back ally markets are more theories but I just viewed that whole world thing like that. They are terrestrial animals after all)

I think Paru is a mad genius, but that she inherited her fathers nuttiness and probably started with one story in mind and then changed part way through to something else, then changed her mind several other times. But let us not forget, this is the daughter of the guy who wrote Grappler Baki, a notoriously WTF fighting manga which while awesome, plays really fast and loose with the rules of human biology and physics to make the story and the fights go where the mangaka wants it to. The Itagaki family itself as a whole is likely composed of mad geniuses.

19:18 I think one reason for this is that Japan is REALLY behind the rest of the world when it comes to meat substitutes. The term “vegetarian” and “vegan” are STILL new concepts even in 2021. The beastars universe sets up that carnivores are fed high protein diets to get their nutrients like with tofu, edemame, and eggs, but I think the western concept of “imitation meat” that is just as good as the real thing hasn’t translated overseas yet. Most Japanese people don’t believe or know that there are some meat substitutes that are good enough to fool meat eaters palates. I think that’s the reason why in beastars, that’s why no substitute has been developed. IRL japan isn’t aware of such things.

Racoons, foxes, skunks... heck, most bears are omnivores. Rodents are omnivores too, and sometimes cannibalistic. Even horses can eat meat. It's why I always end up finding most fictional animal worlds unsatisfying in the end. They usually break things down into a bland pred vs prey duality, and leave out so much of the wiggle room that exists in the reality of animal life.

Beastars excels at chatacter driven conflicts and I think "lore" has become so overrated in story telling these days. Everyone wants massive, complex lore and world building but IMO the beastars world works *better* when we dont really understand it entirly. It feels completely foreign and alien to us so it's easier to suspend our disbelief and get invested in their unique conflicts.
@foxtrotnine3 жыл бұрын
I think thats what the author was trying to do. Trying to cram as much lore in as possible, but rushing it and causing it to be very confusing.
@everforward55613 жыл бұрын
If you don't want lore in your story, don't start adding lore in the first place.
@Alondro773 жыл бұрын
Yep. I've often said that trying to explain the inexplicable is the worst mistake a fiction writer can make. And that's simply because many things in fiction WILL NOT WORK IN REALITY AT ALL. So, going overboard just ends up forcing the reality of the implausibility down the readers' throats. They end up being yanked out of the all-too-critical 'willing suspension of disbelief' when the writer is desperately flailing "NO NO!!! MY 7-HEADED UNICORN DRAGON ELF THAT CAN MAKE THINGS BURST INTO FLAMES BY SINGING OPERA IS TOTALLY PLAUSIBLE AND HERE'S WHY!!" "One Punch Man" and "Mob Psycho 100" never make that mistake, and so even at their most insane, we don't doubt any of it within the framing of the narrative, because the narrative never demands we ask the question of how the hell any of it works.

Maybe this is the only place in the world that carnivores and herbivores actually live in harmony, and not like a bunch of savages? Maybe there was only one group of life animals and nature animals who managed to compromise, while all the others continued living like the actual nature we know about. It could be that the reason why they don't have much contact with the savage animals is that, like Japan, the country where Beastars takes place is located on an island. But that's just a theory. 👀👀
@sapphirewingthefurrycritic9853 жыл бұрын
I think in Zootopia (if you just paid attention to the background) the predators ate fish meat as a substitute for eating prey animals for their diets. It appears that only mammals are sentient and capable of creating a civilization since those are the only creatures we see, no birds or reptiles walking around like how Judy and Nick do. In one of the scenes in the arctic part of the city, we see that there is a shop marked Fish market so that is probably what the predators eat. I think that the Disney animators did the best they could and I know that they could have gone farther but they had a limited amount of time compared to the Beastars story. They were able to establish how the city was able support so many animals and played with the scale for everything from mice to giraffes and how technology would work for them. At least in the Bojack Horseman universe, they made it clear that animals still eat each other and no one bats an eye over it and there are farms with chickens (there was an episode dedicated to it). I have seen a hawk or falcon carry away a mouse person in one episode, a whale eating a bunch of krill and so on. And yeah it's messed up that in that world they made a distinction that some animals are bred to be food and others are allowed to be regular people but they at least talked about how that universe worked.

It's possible that the world of beastars could very well be one of those realities where the continents either never split, or started out a several landmasses before slowly coming fusing together They could basically be living on a modern day pangea with this city basically being one of it's main capital I mean it's fiction it doesn't have to be 1 to 1 identical to our world But this theory does make the most sense

I think it wasn't just the taste of meat but also the instinct to hunt that created the back alley market. Remember when Legosi had that bigger wolf(his instincts to hunt) telling him to eat haru? I think this forces them to eat regular meat and not just any substitute that is similar to meat. Think about domestic cats even though they are well treated with "man made meat" they will still hunt and eat prey even though they don't need it. It's just their nature telling them to eat.

Sounds like they're living in Pangea. That would explain everything being in one place, because the continents wouldn't have split. Also makes sense because if they came from the dinosaurs, that means they probably didn't have that crazy history of all of them dying and the continents separating (allowing for the beastars universe).

In Beast complex chapter 10 and 8 other towns are mentioned. They are numbered districts with specific inhabitants. District 0 is only for perfect Albino/white animals and everything there is completely white. The inhabitants fear the outside and having pigmentation makes one a outsider. District 17 is described as a dangerous place that looks like a warzone. A place where herbivores do not go. We know from chapter 8 that the same police force is active in all districts. And it's perceived as a death sentence, for a herbivore, to be sent there.

Yeah, much as I love Beastars, most of the lore is what TV Tropes call a "Voodoo Shark", an explanation of something like a plot hole that only makes things worse. I do like the dog conspiracy, because of two things: First, the obvious reason is an attempt to explain why breeds of dogs or even dogs at all exist in this world without humans. I can appreciate that. Second, its a cute variant of an old cliché. Usually, when you attempt to create a super-race by genetics of whatever it is to create super-soldiers, but dogs seem more like super-bureaucrats (social and smart). It doesn't go anywhere, but it's fun.
