Kandui: Best Ever? | Part II

June 2015 saw possibly the biggest Indian Ocean swell of the decade - sending perfect XXL waves to Indonesia. The conditions lined up perfectly at Kandui in the Mentawais. For three days straight, some of the best surfers in the world battled it out at one of the world's most perfect left-handers.

Hello Mr.Wilcoxen Hard to believe after surfing santa cruz island with you and brian davis you would actually take my advise about what i had considered the best wave in the mentawaii chain, come home after you went in 01,sold the farm and started the beautiful Kandui resort! The man,the money,the legend Livin the dream....

One of THOSE days:) That you remember perfectly decades later, in 40 odd years of surfing ive had a LOT of perfect days around the Indo Pacific region, but 5 or 6 really stand out, with individual waves i can play back in my mind in crystal detail anytime:)[All your best waves are stored like this:)] We are all the same like this i spose. Two of these days were at Nias, not huge, 6 to 10 max, but absolutely perfect lightly offshored, airbrushed ,corduroy sets that looked like what a surf artist would paint as heaven:) The waves reeled off down the reef with not a drop of water out of place, each wave a clone of the one before, 7 second plus PERFECT barrels that never even come close like shutting down! You literally can only fall as a result of your own mistakes, the wave is a machine!! You could paddle out, drop in, and get barreled with a ciggie in your mouth ,lol. It might be a bit soggy from the spit but:) Which brings me to the point. This[Kandui] is a beautiful wave, but it closing out at the end,often locking you in so no way out but straighten and risk skin on the reef, and having to paddle further after your flogging[yehh, ime lazy,lol] stops it going in the "possible" perfect wave category:/ "Lances right" is good, but the way it barrels so high and tight, and irregularly, keeps it out too. Other waves in this area , are great waves, but i just dont see the attraction given the conditions. As in crowds, animosity, GREED, exploitation of the locals..etc:/ There are SO MANY waves in Indo alone that are rarely or never surfed, and a lot are only boat accessible, but many can be gotten to, and logistically are not a problem!! TIP.."Google Earth"!! You will be amazed at how many perfect waves you can find! Check out Nias, and Kavieng[PNG], . Good examples, detail can be amazing!!! Arugam bay in Sri Lanka also easily shows how useful this tool can be!! Get in to it! Ive found a LOT of accessible waves, more ime not so sure of. The south pacific islands and atolls have a shitload of perfect setups, some you can get to, some boat only! The one yacht trip ive done was an epic part of my life. The excitement of finding a good looking setup with google, checking it out as best you can,, then on your trip calling in there with a "hopeful" air of tension on the boat, to find.... flat:/,lol. Dropped anchor and spent the next day diving, got pissed and had a good night. Next morning, wake to the sound of waves!! YAY, not big, 4 to 6 foot hot lefts zipping down the line barrelling a half dozen times Great wall sections being thrown up to slash then drop in to the next barrel! On a big day, this place would be AWESOME!! Ok.. we all do this a lot, but this wave was a "leg jelly" job! 4 to 600 meter ride, depending on whether it was big enough to make it in to the inside of the bay, and continued to race down the reef, now only about 30 feet from dry land!! A BIG rip rushed up this inside section in front of the wave, rapidly pushing you back out:) [A bit like "pipes" rip] This wave is a great find, so were a number of others, about 1 in three setups i found on google and checked were working, and good! I did not have a great sample size, i checked 7 waves, two were working, and good, the others were not good, or not working:/ It does not take much to ruin what looks from 300 meters altitude, still shot, to be very nice, but a shallow part in the line somewhere closing the wave down, maybe only for 30 meters or less fucks it:/ A closeout end section that locks you in like Kandui is a fail for me too,lol Its quite amazing just how much detail you can see of the "best quality" google earth imagery! The offshores blowing spray off the back... the shadow of a huge lip about to fall, CHECK IT OUT:) BTW, Chopu looks a bit rough, would not have expected it to be what it was!! The reef pass next one south looks like a great lineup! Anyone know anything about it?? I have not got to Tahiti...yet:)

BTW, My "home" break would be either a 100 mile drive at least[Tassie], or bloody Bondi beach..Would you mention it,lol. I grew up surfing shit, i havent had to for decades, why should i when i can afford to travel to the best, and wait for the best conditions:/ I have put a lot of time in travelling to very remote locations with shit, often dangerous living conditions, and just waiting for them to fire, sometimes its worth it, sometimes its a bummer, so "spoiled"???..Hmmm, in that ive had a lot of perfect waves, maybe, but i fuckin worked for em, ime not a tourist who books a room at a resort for 14 days and takes whats on offer along with thee crowds:/ I go for months, sometimes weeks with no surf, sometimes weeks "OF" surf[i consider 3 feet up surf]. lucky dip:/ Now ime not saying i wont go out unless its perfect, but i certainly prefer too these days, i surfed Apocalypse and One palm point in the mid eightys, long before crowds, and they are not perfect, very shallow, heavy waves. Both have perfect barrel sections, but you PAY..A LOT!! Ive lost enough skin thanks:) Sounds a bit like sour grapes there bud, Have a think, there are many ways to finance a full time surfing lifestyle, gemstones for one "legal" way:/
