Dhoni was never a top scorer, he was the man who handled the tough situations. The list goes on. NZ is lucky to have a great captain who also happens to be a great player.

He's not a much better batsman than MD Crowe. He's as good for sure. Maybe even a little better, but not much better. Crowe's career was sadly cut very short by his knee injury. Also, you can't just base it on stats. The game has changed a great deal, and in favour of run scoring in many ways. Personally, i just dislike the comparison between the two. They're both great batting technicians but apart from being right handers that's where the similarities end. Very different players. Both of them very great players and NZ's two best modern greats, although if you take ODI cricket & Test cricket together, Ross Taylor is pretty close as well. There's a service station opposite Eden Park here in Auckland. 8:30 in the morning during a test match I was filling my car. NZ wasn't batting. But there was one player working out in the nets. Williamson. Whether he was working on a perceived technical flaw, preparing for something which might eventuate, or simply making sure his eye was in he was there when no one else was. I can't imagine he would be someone to get on a teammates back for lack of effort or application. But knowing that your leader, despite natural gifts, simply trains and prepares harder and more meticulously than anyone else must not only be inspiring but also sets the standard you would want to emulate. @@vol230 Virat Kohli is undoubtedly a great player but he's an average captain, he is incredibly *reactive* as opposed to being *proactive* , you'll often see him putting a fielder where someone just hit a four for example, while that may seem like a good idea on the surface it hurts the bowlers. You make plans for certain players which involve the lines and lengths you play for the field. For Virat to be constantly changing the field every time someone hits a boundary really hurts the bowlers chances of finding and maintaining the wicket taking lines and lengths. Obviously in some cases it's good, if the batsman is hitting the gap at will it must be covered but these decisions must be weighed against the value of sticking to the plan and taking the wicket or changing the plan and protecting runs. On top of that Kohli is *extremely* bad at keeping his calm and temper on the field, he often can't hide his expression on his face and looks like he berates his players often, in the long run this will hurt player and team morale, not counting the advantage it gives the opposing team to see how flustered the opposing captain is.
