I love this video. My husband and I had a male Kangal. He was a happy-go-lucky boy but very serious worker. He was friendly with our friends and was respectful to our old dogs. Unfortunately, he died in an unexpected accident while evacuating with the goats from a wildire. He was 7 years old then. We still miss him and love the breed very much.

We have two Kangle's ( Cricket and Mary Tyler) on our farm in Ohio. In the past, we had some problems with predators..Coyotes, some feral hogs and the rare occasion Panther, Mountain lion. After 2 years of the pair being on the property (we raise beef cattle) we have NO problems....when I say no problems I mean None. They are great with the Grand children and always on the guard, So be aware that if you are looking at this breed for protection, they need lots of room to run, they are extremely protective and can be unbelievably strong. Having said that I wouldn't take a dollar and a quarter for either.

dog newbie here, do you have to train them so they protect the live stock and attack predators? or is it a natural instinct
@john98423 жыл бұрын
@@ciscoplank8107 Mostly natural, however, they have to be with the livestock on a regular basis. For example, some friends of ours have one, we have to pen our dogs when he comes over. Now, he has a good time running and playing but he doesn't know what his job is. He's a city dog. My dogs go with me everywhere on the farm and some trips to town. Occasionally, I leave them out with the herd all night (weather permitting) and they stay back away from the herd, but the herd is always in their sight, that's the way they were raised. I know your next question..have you ever had one take on another animal? Yes...final score House 2 predator 0. Dogs are like people, we are a product of our past. If you are a first time dog owner my advice is to go to someone that has them...You'll soon find out that these are very powerful dogs, they will not back down. This can be a problem if they are left alone to raise themselves..they must have boundaries, they have to understand you are the pack leader.

@@john9842 Hmmmm, interesting, I have recently bought a farm and soon I will be raising some cattle and sheep, I live in northern of british colombia, Canada, and there are a lot of wolves, coyotes, black bears, sometimes cougars. So I figured out I'm gonna need some dogs. I have heard that the Kangals are very independent and good shepherd dogs in general, I know they are huge and powerful but I'm willing to risk it considering I have never owned a dog before, so... uhhh, I'm gonna need some help. I have a ton of questions, It would be greatly appreciated if you answer them cuz I know nothing about dogs. 😅😅 So they don't need training at all to protect the cattle and sheep? I buy them as puppies, feed them, take care, spend time with them, and make them get used to the livestock, and they will automatically guard? How will they know what they should guard against and what not? Is there special food to feed them from the supermarket, or just meat and chicken? Any vitamin pills they need to take? How often should I take them to the vet? Any potential health issues they might come across? Do I keep them outside all the time, even during the winter (btw its gets cold here, sometimes it can reach up to -20 C)? Do I have to put a leash on them and walk them everyday, or is them running around freely in the acreage enough? Is it best if they are as a pack (3 or 4 kangals together)? If yes, is it better if they are siblings? Does it matter if they are male or female? Sorry, I know it's a lot but I'm extremely intrigued 😇

@@StonnieDennis what a great video! We had 2 Anatolian crosses and just lost one to bone cancer. My whole life living with goldens and a pom mix, they were the first dogs I couldn't train myself (they were adult rescues and had behavioral issues as well). I found a professional dog trainer and behaviorist, and we trained/rehabbed them. I have tremendous respect for them. They were wonderful members of our family and I even had them certified as therapy dogs. We were devastated when we lost one to bone cancer this spring and are looking for his successor. I've watched and re-watched this video and keep coming back to wanting another LGD, specifically a Kangal. They might not be your ideal dog, but this video reminded me exactly why they're my ideal dog for our family and situation as we encounter more coyotes and black bears in the suburbs on the east coast each year. In fact, we constantly let our dog out when a few black bears were in the area this summer. He "constantly" barked along the perimeter (not typical for him unless we see the threat), and the bear didn't come to our neighborhood this year. Thank you for sharing these snippets of your work and life. They really do make a difference!

Thanks Stonnie, I have an Australian blue healer mixed with ??? It has recently been proposed that the Kangal is part of his mix. -He has the curled up tail. -Looseness of the skin around his shoulder blades and neck. -He’s quite a bit larger than the average blue heeler. Closer to the size of a German Shepherd. His skull is much larger than the Australian blue healer. To look at him you might think he was a cross between a German Shepherd and Australian blue heeler. However that doesn’t explain other characteristics. Many of the characteristics you described are characteristic of him: -Sniffing around and getting acquainted with every nook and cranny. He has been a traveling dog so he has a new environment to check out quite frequently. -Taking pausing in his meanderings and checking out the environment overall. I borrow from these skills that he naturally possesses to alert me to details of the environment I can no longer hear. -The way he will approach somebody FAST who is approaching us. Most of the time Phoenix is silent rather than barking in his approach. 98% of the time he stops and sniffed them once he is close enough to touch. -Phoenix is seriously a decision making dog. A lot of our training has needed to focus on giving him acceptable choices to choose from. Phoenix is my Service Animal in Training. We have done his training with no financial backing. Most of my education has been through KZbin videos. I am delighted to say your heel work using the rubber mats was one of the first lessons I took to heart. I hope to do some traveling in the next few months. Perhaps you will welcome our presence at your facility and help us clean up some of our challenging spots when we are passing through your part of the world. Thanks for all you do. Ana and Phoenix

Stonnie, I've recently stumbled upon your videos and am so glad I have. We are preparing for a new puppy and take very seriously our role as responsible dog owners. My husband and I are grateful.
@emmamemma41624 жыл бұрын
Hi! Here's how we socialized our puppy to other dogs (she's ten months now and gets along quite nicely). 1. We watched other dogs from a distance. This is great when your dog is not fully vaccinated, and teaches them that seeing other dogs does not mean they'll get to play or interact. 2. We set up play dates with vaccinated, healthy dogs of different types and ages, but especially with other puppies. Meeting up outside before going into either dog's home is one way of preventing tension between the dogs, but avoid on-leash greetings. 3. We found a group of dogs that like to play together (in our case we where lucky enough that this was at the local dog park, but if you're unsure about the park in your area being safe or not, try connecting with local dog owners and setting something up). Training facilities and pet stores will sometimes arrange puppy play sessions. What kind of dog are you getting?

@Stonnie Dennis since the Kangal dog has a huge responsibility guarding its teritory, it will most likely fight for until his death to prevent predators entering the safezone. U mentioned something about a couple of coyotes in this video. Worst case scenario they could outnumber the kangal and may end up killing the dog, in order to give this dog an advantage u should get him a thick heavy duty collar (with spikes if neccesary) to prevent injuries in the neck area, since predators instinctivly aim for the throat for a quick and easy execute.

While some Turkic tribes were migrating to Anatolia, they came along with these dogs from the Middle Asia. Through this period of time the character of the Kangals was shaped in accordance with the needs of these nomadic tribes. First, they are great observers, spectecular controller of the field where they have settled. Just check how she carefully takes look at territory while she was sitting on bench. Seconds, the harmony between them is prominent advantage against attack of wolf pack in protecting flock. I must also note that apperantly your girl is fed well but has a little bit overweight. In Anatolia, they have much time of unleashed, free in the field. They eat relatively less compared to other dogs having similar size. That's why life expectancy is higher. Lastly, I bet she will like the mix of whole wheat flour, barley, egg and milk more than any kind of meat. :)

Ive learned the hard way about lgd breeds and kangals. I currently run a team of Great pryneases for inside work, 2 kangals for outside. There are 3 types of kangals. The American version is the softest and the furthest from what the original working turkish kangal is or what they breed. They are actually smaller in America, lack the hard nerves and stopping force and are not as effective at stopping large threats. They have smaller paws and smaller head size. This is due to poor breeding and no real selection process to maintain the integrity of function follows form. In America we take hard working lines and make them house pets. Which should be a crime . People believe that by making the dog do nothing that this is a form of love. And working them for what they were bred to do is abuse. The issue is you cant import authentic large kangals legally. There ways. The second type are the hybrids. Where they mix their kangals in turkey with say mastiff, st bernard, etc etc. To make them appear more dramatic but that also kills the drive for work. The third type are true hard lines kangals that 99% of people outside of turkey dont own. No one in America has anything respectable and solid. What they got are left over inbred and really dogs that you find as stray dogs in turkey. Kangals are not True LGD like your...great pryneases, Marimar. Depending on your flock size and land. What you need is Variety! Kangals love to roam. They will patrol the outside perimeter constantly. This also means they will defend against attacks and it also means they will start fights with other dogs. It also means they will the average lgd in a fight. And if you have a proper bred hardliner, it will make easy work out of breeds like pitbull. A wolf...not so much. Maybe just enough to defend and make a north american wolf think twice. They are also more human agressive than the normal lgd, depending your breeding. They will not obey commands, they will not heal, or be your german shepherd. But they will stop threats to your live stock. If you get one as a pet. Your doing the dog injustice. My Kanagals will not come into the barn even during rain, and snow. Even during freezing weather. Despite my having a ring for them with hay and their own section. They will dog a hole large enough for them to curl into and just watch the fileds. The males are constantly in the mix. Looking for trouble and intruders. Which caused issues because they will not hesitate to attack anyone they see as a threat. So dont rush I to this breed if your not using them for work.

My dogs are nothing worth barging about frankly. Which is why I said I learned the hard way. Trying to find a proper kangal for me proved to be to expensive and no worth the price. I found a gentleman who breeds relatively good kangals and he manages to get them into america by bringing in a pregnant female. Hes got connection straight from the motherland but I was quoted several grand. I had to walk away. So I went by word of mouth locally here and finally got my self the team inhave now. But am I content? Deep down no. I wanted a proper kangal from turkish bloodlines. The gp are heavier set dogs. This is just to inform you if you’d like some knowledge on the topic because saying shit like that just turns you into a laughing stock. There’s a difference between fighting dogs and guard dogs, And Kangal are not fighting dogs, They often get killed along with there flocks from smaller Anatolian wolves but I’m not here to criticize. You can ask any good dog men that isn’t biased... And they will all essentially agree that a real game American pitbull terrier will take down any other breed, These dogs are machines brotha they are “The ONLY” breed that is capable of fighting for literally 3 hours straight without quitting, No other dogs can remotely match that... Infact 20 minutes is almost pushing it for any other dog in the world some other medium sized breeds can hang in there for 30 minutes which is pretty rare and 100% impossible when they are up against a game pit... They just can’t keep up with the pressure this dog puts on them. The breed is endangered right now... We had family breeding real game dogs and even they are struggling to find stock to breed their dogs with now, 99% of quote on quote “Game American pits” are fake cur dogs now with very similar attributes it’s sad that all these breeders and kennels are lying to the faces of millions and telling them they have pure APBT’S if you wanna purchase one you can always come to me when you find a breeder and I’ll try to help you as much as possible on deeming if the dogs are real American pits or not. Take care guys✌️

Thanks for all the great videos Stonnie. I have a new shepherd mix about 5 months. You mentioned the kangal also malinios alone with your small child. I'm having moderate trouble with my shepherd mix chasing/jumping/nipping/barking at smaller kids if they are running, playing etc. None of it has been what I would consider aggressive, more like rough horseplay, but not well mannered and I want to curb it asap. Hoping you can potentially make a video addressing this and similar issues. Or point me to a video youve already made. Thanks regardless! Peace.

Sounds like a shepherd puppy being a shepherd puppy. Does it have other outlets to play/exercise?
@rg86er4 жыл бұрын
he and my other dog play outside regularly and local dog park almost daily. I got him about 4 weeks ago now as a rescue. I realize that those are typical behaviors, especially for shepherd type dogs, but he's getting big enough now (~40lbs) where he could easily hurt a kid by just knocking them down.

P.S. I should say that I have watched the "stop puppy biting" video more than once now. I'm going to be more consistent with a dominant type correction. Just easier said than done in a timely manner if they are off leash and running. Also considering the different remote collar options. Your opinions are welcome. Thanks

She loves child. A typical kangal. They love children very much. Akbash dogs are as beautiful as kangal. They are also grown in Eskişehir. I recommend.

Hey Can i have a Kangal in a Apartment?? Will he fit or is it suitable for kangal ??
@gokmenkilincarslan70824 жыл бұрын
No. You need big open space for Kangal. These are NOT meant for an apartment. They need acres of land.
@wyattredhouse2523 жыл бұрын
They're not meant to be in a small space. They bore quickly so it's good to have land for them to roam.

This dog is independent, like security contractor. They wont take orders, but they do what is necessary and according to how it must be done. Let tham do the work. Do not order but guide. Just introduce perimeter, members of the herd, that is it.

if you have jackals or wolves problem at your neighborhood cut the ears of kangal's , they can hear better and very effective while fighting with wolf their ears being an issue when opponent bite it. this is the reason of many kangals has no ears

Guys, I have 2 of these dogs, you can't get them as a pet, DON'T get them just as a pet. Humans aren't enough for these dogs, they are natural livestock guardians, you need to have some sort of livestock for them to protect. You can treat them like a pet but they can't ONLY be a pet.

Our dog Mandy is 8 years old this year and she will notice a new moth on the wall when she goes outside at night....we love her dearly but obedience is NOT her strong point. Her favorite place is Home Depot. She enjoys interacting with people. It's funny that when anyone pets her, she eventually turns so they are scratching her hips at the base of her tail.

Yes! The Great Pyrenees. I have a great Pyrenees Kangal mix though and he is an outstanding dog. Great with children and loves being outside 24/7 during the winter. The house is to hot for him when we have the furnace on

I have an Anatolian Shepherd she's 2. I was wondering if it's too late to train her to be with livestock? She can see my livestock but she's in a fenced yard with my heeler mix I would like to train her to be with the animals without wanting to eat them. Any advice appreciated.

Kangals natural instinct is to protect livestock.But who knows the result without trying. My personal opinion : there will be no trouble .Kangals aren't monsters:)
