Today we're back with a new Gearblocks update that adds a whole series of amazing parts! These parts are mainly used with axles but will allow us to make better drive systems for vehicles!
Snap parts together, resize them, change their materials, paint them, and link their behaviours together. Choose from over 200 parts, including functional mechanical elements such as motors, gears, pulleys, joints, springs, actuators, and much more. Turn, grab and shove your machines and watch the parts physically interact. Jump into the driver's seat and put your vehicles through their paces. Crash and smash your constructions to smithereens. Improve your building skills, or test out your creations, in the tutorial and challenge scenarios. Make rag-dolls from body parts and use them as your custom player character. Mod the game with Lua scripting to create your own custom tools, scenarios, challenges and mini-games. Share your creations with the community, try out what others have made, and maybe learn a new building trick or two along the way!

What should we build with the new parts in Gearblocks? Edit: I also apparently confused a CVT (continuously variable transmission) and centrifugal clutch. My bad on that, will explain better in the future in edits if I have to.

something simple you can try to make an automatic transmission, basically the transmission you made at the end but with centrifugal clutch gears instead, they would engage depending on how fast you are going and change your gear 🙂

You can try to replicate Koenigsegg LST transmission. It is quite similar to the thing you build, because it has clutch for every gear. LST transmission is technicaly a 3 speed gearbox with another 3s gearbox attached to it output shaft, what gives you 3x3=9 speeds Idk how you could control that, but you always can try

A centrifugal clutch like that one is not the same as the CVT found in mopeds and snowmobiles. The centrifugal clutch you have in the game does not change the gear ratio, the only thing it does is engage with increasing rmp and makes sure the rpm of the input and the output will match.

I agree 100%. A CVT is a continuously variable transmission and has nothing to do with a clutch.

​@@thomasrupprecht9385KAN's thinking about a centrifuge that's used to actuate a CVT to keep input rpm fairly constant. I believe snowmobiles often use a centrifugal clutch before the transmission. I know most small-engine tools like chainsaws and weedwhackers often use centrifugal clutches

The centrifugal clutch usually is used on the crankshaft of an engine with a gear or pulley system. It works with weights and springs that extend when the engine gets to a certain rpm and engage with the gear part of the clutch causing rotation just by friction. Used on Karts and motorcycles a lot.

It would be very very cool if the dev added 'synchro sleeves' with ID gear teeth, so we could build IRL transmissions. The geared clutch could be used for a number of things, one that comes to mind is a pony axle, or lockable secondary differential (4x4, selectable). The thing you are thinking of is a CVT gearset, two cones with a belt/chain that changes speed/gearing based on the speed of one side. Centrifugal clutch has a 'drum brake' system that will engage or disengage at specific RPM (over a range dictated by spring load handling). If there are any kind of logic elements, you could make a sequential gearset with multiple clutches, moving gears, and actuators that are enabled in sequence.

12:53 these are very different, there are basically just a drum brake attached to the engine shaft. You are thinking of a centrifugal CVT clutch. Also the centrifugal clutch is used for go karts and some motorcycles.

18:10 Smaller gear on the driver means more torque because the smaller gear causes less resistance to the driving force by the resisting force. The driving gear acts as a class 3 lever, more distance more resistance.

For the clutchs, for example leaving them on first gear and making one of the two clutch gear invert, one key would be enough for the second gear

snowmobiles and mopeds have centrifugal clutches AND continuously variable transmissions (CTVs), which is what you're describing

You can make an automatic transmission using the centrifugal clutch if you have some logic checking for RPM and controlling clutches, i think. Basically, the RPM will command clutches that will engadge and desengade sets of gears, which basically changes the gear hoocked to the tramission line. I think at least

15:00 I believe what you are talking a bout is a Continuously Variable Transmission, not a clutch. This clutch only connects the two sides if the rpm difference between is high enough. The interval between the lowest and highest speed is the part where the clutch is grinding and not transmitting the full torque. also: you could perhaps try to make a working H-shifter transmission? maybe even a variation of it: the shifter of the iconic Citroen CV2. (might be a relatively simple way to provide the input for the H-shifter)

you are talking about the snowmobile variator which is connected to the centrifugal clutch,the variator is changing the gear ratio using some rollers

Love CVT, max efficiency plus max torque. Volvo has made an CVT gearbox for an 40 ton truck, that means you need a maybe 60 ton CVT torque clutch system inside to keep up with the pressure - cool tech.

18:30 - have you seen spintronics? it's an analogy of electric circuits using gears. I think the clutch would do something similar where it has a total resistance based on it's radius and it's force then they would both help slowing down the rotation. I might be wrong but I'm heavily considering to buy this game to build spintronics stuff...

centrifugal clutches go on pitbikes and such, they have weights that when spun engage the outer bell creating friction and drive, A CVT (Continuously variable trans) is on a snowmobile,

14:40 I assume you're talking about the CVT Transmission/Gokart and similar small engine clutches as that's about how they work and are all about the same from what I have seen. A rather old one, and not very good in demanding applications due to the belt's tendency to wear out rather quickly; I recall the one lap wear being far too extreme for the F1 car that had that transmission type, which also made the engine sound cursed af as it was a steady max rev regardless of the speed...

That style clutch is more like a basic go kart/ mini bike clutch. Cvt or torque converter is what you were thinking.

Kan could try to hire an editor, so when Kan is explaining something, editor could help viewers to better understand what he is saying. like when he tried to explain how centrifugal clutch works, he could just add a clip of CVT how it works

Each clutch has a primary and secondary keybind you can set. So you could set each clutch to a toggle, and have the next clutch activation key as the secondary activation key for the clutch before it. So each time you gear up, it activates the next clutch, and deactivates the previous one. Not sure how to handle gearing back down though. Would be simple if your vehicle only has 2 gears, but anything greater than 2 gears would need some other way to handle gearing back down.

14:40 the clutch youre talking about isnt a clutch. yourtalking about a cvt transmission. a centefrugal clutch just like the one in the game is placed behind the input pulley of the system that is commonly used in mopeds and snow mobiles

it's not a clutch you're describing. It's a variable speed belt driven gearbox that uses cones to change diameter of pullys

Mopeds don't have a clutch like that centrifugal clutch, it's known as a CVT and it stands for 1 of 3 things (depending on where you're from), clutchless variable transmission, centrifugal variable transmission or continuous variable transmission . I can get the confusion but as a motorcycle mechanic, seeing kAN, as a fellow mechanic, make that mistake kinda hurts 😅

The type of clutch you're talking about, kAN Gaming is called a CVT or "Continuously Variable Transmission" there are 3 basic parts to a CVT, the is the Variator pulley mounted to the engine or motor output shaft, the Belt, and the Centrifugal clutch out the output shaft to the wheel or axle. The "Variator" which is the part that you're trying your best to describe that changes the ratio uses weights like your classic centrifugal clutch, but instead of relying on rpm to simply engage or disengage the output. A CVT Variator widens or narrows the pulley gap depending on input RPM, causing the ratio to change. The weights I mentioned earlier are called fly-weights and they push on the plate "at higher RPM" that is spring loaded, compressing said spring, and thus Narrowing the gap on the pulley forcing the belt to ride higher in the pulley groove, and thus increasing the ratio for speed. when RPM is lowered, the belt is allowed to go deeper into the pulley groove, and thus lowers the ratio for torque. you need high torque to break inertia, but once the vehicle is moving, It takes less torque to maintain or gain speed so the ratio is changed to be geared for speed rather than torque. and the ratio created is directly proportional to the RPM of the motor / engine, and the load / resistance. and the ratio changes automatically as the vehicle accelerates. This also allows the ratio to drop to create more torque for let's say an uphill slope. and increases the ratio for speed on a downhill slope, or flat and level.

The bigger gear loses the fight because its torque is being converted into rotational speed at a 3:1 ratio, effectively dropping it to...what, 1/3rd the torque? The other one, at a 1:3 ratio, is magnifying the torque giving it ~triple the torque at the cost of 2/3rds its rotational velocity on the output. To put it another way, what's easier: Lifting a 50 pound/22.5kg weight lifting it alongside your body, or locking your arm and rotating it level to your shoulder straight out from your body? One requires a lot more force on specific muscles even though both are doing the same work.

The problem with grip (with tires) is people refers to grip as friction force but in reality grip is pressure force. so in a corner, a narrow tire or a soft tire will have more grip (ability to hold a direction) A wide tire give the ability to change directions - more rotation in a turn, braking, and acceleration. it not grip - its friction forces! Think of it like a (wide) monster truck tire vs a (narrow) tractor tire.

Hello kAN, can you build some kind of differencial lock please? I plan to buy this game and want to build nearly realistic vehicles like semitrucks and off-Road Trucks. To build these I want to build some parts by hand before. Therefor it wozld be useful to understand how these parts (difflock, retarder etc) work Thank you so much!

Diff lock is in game, if you hover over diff and open options (shift+e) you can bind a locking keys a also set locking force Or you can leave it unbind and it will be working as viscous LSD (limited slip differential)

When you tested the clutch gears it really annoyed me because you put the clutch gears on the wrong side the drive axle shouldn't have any clutch gears on it not only that it would look cooler to allwase have the gears in the gearbox spinning

Under connectors you have a pin that let's you hold creation in place, so you don't have to build a stand when you're testing something.

There absolutely _are_ transmission that move gears themselves to change ratios. Any manual transmission does that with gears sliding on splined shafts. To make meshing easier those gear teeth have tapered ends, although that's not always a thing. System with clutches for each ratio is basically an automatic transmission, however they _can_ be shifted manually. As a matter of fact, if a transmission controller in your car goes out, it's easy to convert it to a "manumatic" or clutchless auto. An auto transmission selects gears via couple of solenoids (combinations of on/off, so 2 solenoids = 4 gears) and it is just as easy to control them with a multi-position switch that you switch by hand.

while those snowmobile trannies might use centrifugal in operation, they're technically cat's. the ones on go karts are just a bell on one side and hinged clutch shoes retained by springs that expand and make contact with the bell above a certain rpm. their purpose is to let you come to a complete stop without the engine dying. (similar how it works to a torque converter, and is a replacement for a manual clutch). as for the the keybindings, does the game not have a controller where you can use logic to make it have one be the boolean opposite of the other? like if clutch 1 is on, clutch 2 is off? and vice versa? would allow you to make some really cool things if they can be triggered by a controller or similar

A video going over transmissions and how they work and transfer power would be really cool honestly, especially with a game like this to use as a visualizer. Even 90s era automagic transmissions are beyond me, i know its gears and pressures but honestly its still just black magic to me. I watched a 3 hour youtube video of a master transmission mechanic taking apart and trying to explain the power transfer of the zf 8 speed in my ram and by the end of it even he didnt really understand how it works. 2 planetary gears, 6 direct drive with 2 overdrive gears...

The centrifugal clutch does two main things. It disconnect the drivetrain at idle, and increases clamping force with RPM. I'm not sure they are EVER? used for electric motor though. e.g. Start the motor, idle at 400rpm, clutch stays disengaged. Open throttle, clutch starts engaging at 500rpm, clamping pressure increases with RPM. Higher clamping force increases maximum torque before clutch slip occurs. A small amount of clutch slip is good when load suddenly changes - like starting from a dead stop, or changing gears.

I wish they would let you put a clutch gear in diffs so you can lock them. I tried to make it work but it just doesn't let you put a clutch spur gear in the premade diff parts :(

9:52 i would say put a clutch on right after the brake on the wheels, and make then the same keybind. so when you brake it didnt stop the whole axle

Tye centrifugal clutch can be used on small go-carts and scooters so that it enganges when you increase throttle so you don't have to press a clutch
