Amphibious: In Zoology this denotes organisms who spend at least one part of their lifecycle the majority of time in the water, and at least one part of their lifecycle the majority of time on land. Usually this coincide with a pre-adult stage using some form of gills to breath, then undergoing a manner of metamorphosis to develope air-breathing lungs as adults. In Technology this typically denotes a vehicle designed to easily function as both an air or ground vehicle and and aquatic or submersible vehicle.

There's also 'Amphibian', a class of vertebrate, which are all (or at least the majority are) 'amphibious', able to operate on both land and water. Not everything that is amphibious is an amphibian.

Amphibians are one of the five classes of vertebrates*, they have a mucus-covered skin that has a lot of glands for producing said mucus. They partially breath through their skin and therefore have to keep it moist to survive. That means that they need to regularly submerge their bodies in water. Amphibians are toads, frogs, olms, etc. Source: school biology class (I hope this helps, sorry for the bad English, I'm German.) *the other classes are fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals

Amphibious is different for animals and vehicles. For animals, Amphibians rely on both dry land AND water, at different stages of their life. Most lay eggs in water and adolescents breathe water (think frog eggs & tadpoles) then spend their adult lives on land, but still need regular exposure to water to keep moist. Amphibious vehicles just mean they are designed to operate both in and above water, e.g. The Ducks tour buses, lander tanks, and seaplanes

I think I saw somewhere about how "fish" have such a huge genetic diversity that they can't really be logically grouped together. (I.e. some types of fish are more closely related to land animals than they are to other types of fish). Maybe that means that anything that is a streamlined shaped water creature counts as a fish, and therefore penguins are fish?

This doesn't fully explain it but I would say an amphibian has to be able to breath underwater and on land, however not at the same time it can be at different stages of its life. Humans can swim but we cant live and breath underwater so we aren't amphibious. I also don't think penguins can breath underwater they are just birds that can swim so they are not amphibious.

Actually due to Darwin’s theory and modern knowledge every living being is kinda fish. Every living being is coming from a fish so it’s not like there are fishes mammals etc. But there are fishes they divide into 4 ‚groups’ one of them is ‚musclefin’ then they go on land they became amphibians, then reptiles, birds and in the end mammals. Of course there is much more to it but according to my knowledge it is something like this. I may madr some mistakes because i lack some words in english so i used quite literall ‚translation’ from my language.
