NOOB vs PRO: Tugboat Challenge! (Scrap Mechanic Gameplay)

Back again with more Noob vs Pro Scrap Mechanic! Today Dapper and I are competing in a tugboat challenge where we each build a boat capable of maneuvering a barge around a river map! The barge then goes from dock to dock making deliveries of super heavy refinery bots!

What is happening with the water is reinforcing a theory on how the game calculates physics, I think the calculation of two objects has its own calculations which are inferior to the physics for one object. And in particular the transfer of energy is extremely inconsistent for multiple object calculations. A further theory which is what this reinforces is that pistons with bearings create another creation which adds to the multi creation calculation. The further down this line the worse the physics become for energy transfer. The reason your speed varies so much is because the part of your grabber claw holding on to the barge is a thing creation when looked at by physics and the part that is part of the arm is part of the ship so unless the ship is in contact with the barge, it is calculating 3 creation interactions and thus the energy loss is multiplied when the ship is not in direct contact with the barge. This is quickly turning into a super wall of text but the reason I came to this theory is because when hauling a trailer directly attached to a vehicle moved faster then When the were attached by pipes despite being the same vehicle and trailer.

Actually dapper kept having half their engines off. At 19:35 you can see only the top left of rear thrusters is on and dapper is slow Then at 20:36 when they are suddenly fast again all the thrusters are on.

this is incorrect. for sail boats/ships, a ship is square rigged and has atleast 3 masts and a boat is anything else. But for motorised boats/ships a ship is a large intended for ocean voyages.

idea: Multiplayer Monday - Tugboat Create transport barges that can carry collectors full of raw (unrefined) materials to the refineries. Once the material is refined the player can move on to the finish line.

similar idea: mount the refineries & boxes on the barge & have several resource boxes along the course. they need to push refinery barges close enough to so that resources refine & fill the boxes. maybe the resource locations have free-bearing wheels along the wall to help guide the barge into a narrowing dock to aid alignment. bonus difficulty/strategy: have more resource in each locations than necessary & limited box inventory space. they must fill their box while collecting a full stack of all 4 refineables (they had a similar requirement on their drill+saw harvester-collector multiplayer monday race). speeding up the refining process could be done by changing the refine-bot recipes (or complicating it by having some rods refine for a little, and some refine for a lot)

if you do tugs in the future, using a two point hook, instead of a one point hook, will give you more controllability. Also, heavier tugs work better.

Whelp, now you have to challenge the Multiplayer Monday Crew to an improved version of this. Maybe make it to where they have preloaded barges, and have to move two barges (only allow them to move one at a time) between two locations, and then reach a finish line.

If you do another tug boat, add strafe, that will help you with rotation. The boats are steering weird when pushing because you're off center. CoM and CoT all over again. You put your thrust in the center you get a rocket, you put it to the side you get a beyblade.

You should try From the Depths. It, unsurprisingly, handles boats better. 😋 But seriously, if you want to make some big boats that actually work well, From the Depths gives you way more tools and better water physics. I suspect you'd find it a lot more rewarding than Scrap Mechanics nonsense buoyancy stat. (Seriously, they have a weight stat and volume is measured in blocks, why do they need a buoyancy stat?!)

Kan I have an idea that might be better. Instead of ending the race at the Dock where you drop off the refineries, have another set of objects waiting at the first drop off dock and then take the other items and load onto the barge and take them to the first dock drop off there then take the barge back to the start to finish the race or go back past the second dock all the way around to the back side of the starting dock.
