So you've never heard of a marron? This video will tell you everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask! Catching marron is an integral part of every Kangaroo Island holiday - it's good fun and they are just soooo tasty. Watch the whole family get involved in trapping a delicious meal (or two) - and yes, we still have all our fingers!

Wow I had no idea that marron grew that big! The holding cages are a great idea. They looked delicious on the grill as well. I've added marron to the list of things I want to catch when I finally visit SA haha

Sort of leave most yabbies in the shade, don't they? They certainly taste better too imo - we grill them on the BBQ with a chilli sauce. There is still the offer of that beer Rohan when you make it here!

Always envious to see a feed like that! What a great place to get away from it all. Cheers PP

Yes, we love it! We are very careful to keep the marron situation sustainable, only take what we immediately need and top up the stocks every year.

Why are the claws of marrons so small in proportion to the body? Do their claws get proportionately bigger and closer to the width of the body as they grow older? We've all seen yabbies with claws bigger than the body itself. Why is the marron different?
@captainfrank01
@captainfrank01 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! I think that is just how they are - I have never seen a really large one with significantly large claws.

@@captainfrank01 Why are marrons of above 500 grams so rare to find despite sources officially claiming that they reach up to 2.2 kg?
@captainfrank01
@captainfrank01 2 жыл бұрын
@@Someone-zx7xd I read that the larger (2kg+) species are only found in Tasmania and that it takes about 30 months for marron to reach acceptable market size of 150-250 gms. Final adult size depends on food availability, number of marron competing for it, temperature and water quality amongst other factors. I'm no biologist mate! Let me say that a couple of marron of 200gm or so is a good meal!

Yes, I have to say that I'm a little surprised that no-one in Victoria has tried farming them (that I know of) - they would do well in the cooler areas, I'm sure.

Hi Captain! I would like to ask your permission to provide a link to this video for our customers at The Oyster Farm Shop please? We want provide visitors with an insight into the various aquaculture activities on the island, and until we have time to make our own video presentation yours seems to be the most informative about marron farming on KI that I have found. Please feel free to contact me at admin@oysterfarmshop.com.au to chat further. Thanks

Thanks for asking first! Unfortunately I am only a visitor on the property where this was filmed and when I spoke to the owners about sharing this they were not happy to do it - sorry.
I thought one thing and the truth is something else 😂
