you can read kanji in two ways; onyomi and kunyomi onyomi is the chinese reading of a kanji (or atleast the japanese imitation of chinese sounds for chinese characters) kunyomi is the japanese word for the kanji (ps. these words already existed before kanji was brought in japan) onyomi is used when it's paired with kanji alone kunyomi is used when it's paired with hiragana and katakana I'm not expert at japanese so consult some other videos or have some research regarding this topic to understand this topic further

Onyomi is derived from the Chinese pronunciations of the kanji. Kunyomi is based on the Japanese translation of the meaning of kanji. The kanji mountain is read “shān” in Chinese. The sound was interpreted as “san” by the Japanese people and that is onyomi (Chinese reading). On the other hand, the Japanese word for mountain was “yama” and that is the kunyomi (Japanese reading) of the kanji.
