It sounded like that this "Broken promise" he made years ago left such a bad memory in him, that basically his brain/body tried to protect him by forgetting. This is actually something that can happen in real life, as some sort of protective matter, well unintentionally though since it usually comes from a traumatizing experience. Glad that despite his memory holes he got together with her in the end.

Quite surprising too. The human mind will try to shield us from a traumatic event no matter what so that way we can function properly. I would have thought the human mind would have told him to stay away from the girl since she represents the trauma. This happened to me! Something, that I don't remember anymore, happened, when I was small that made me completely forget kindergarten and 1st to 6th grade. I only remember random things from that time, but they aren't important. I basically have zero memories of the years 2005 to 2015/16 aside from random things. This comes with the downside that I can't tell you what happened during that time. I only know what school and kindergarten I went thanks to legal documents from that time.

It's irritating that she keeps saying that he broke the promise, but she's the one that left without a trace. No explanation, no sorry, just poof gone. It was a traumatic experience for him. You can tell because his brain did what brains do best when dealing with acute trauma: protect itself. Wouldn't be surprised that the reason why he's so withdrawn now, as compared to the past, is because of that one moment. If she had just said she'd have to leave the next day, it would have turned out differently.

This was just a touching story. Yui was trying to forget about Rirura since the promise was broken and it was something of a shock to him or even traumatizing. It wasn’t until she showed and blistered her way into his life. I’m surprised at how she was calm about him not remembering the promise and also realizing it was probably her fault. Despite not remembering their old promise, he made a new promise and I think it’s best if he doesn’t remember the past. It will only hurt him more. Amazing story today Kanon

This was just so wholesome and heartwarming! Yui may have forgotten everything in the past, his promise of Rirura, but that didn't stop Rirura from trying to keep her promise to stay with Yui, even after being separated because of her father's death for years. And the end where Yui found his confidence by literally trying to dig up the past, was very heartwarming. And it was all capped off with him finding new purpose, new reason to be with Yui, to see her smile. He may not remember the past, even after digging up the time capsule, but she remembers, and that's all that matters to them. Yui and Rirura are now a couple, and that's all that matters, and now they can forge new memories together, and stay with each other for the rest of their lives. I couldn't help but smile all the way to the end, it was that heartwarmingly wholesome and adorably sweet and enjoyable.

I really did love this type of story. It was more realistic in a way, I loved the fact Rirura did not give up on him and understood why he had forgotten her. She waited for him when he was ready then when he was ready you can just feel the pure love between them. I also loved the part that you can always fall in love again, he lost that love but it came back to him. Not going to lie ot brought some happy tears, I was happy to see this beautiful story unfold.

Some time capsules end up with a sad ending... The spot their buried in gets developed so that they can't be accessed in the future (paved over, a house built on the site, a store placed there, etc.). Perhaps the people who bury the time capsule have a falling out, so they never dig it up again. Or if one of them does, it brings back the bad memories that led to the breakup, and that person destroys the things they once loved. Even worse, one of those who buried the time capsule dies. Thus, digging it up can be heartbreaking and painful. But then again, digging it up can bring back precious memories of the lost loved one.

I'm probably the only one who felt really uncomfortable with this manga. Maybe because the audience already is explained of the trauma, that I was waiting for Yui to scream at Rurira for leaving him at the park without an explanation. With the backstory, his reaction to her advances seemed uncanny. I would've digested the story much better had there been NO flashback of the past, and we were left completely in the dark of the couple's backstory until the very end. But with it, it just felt very... unsatisfying, knowing that Yui had every right to be angry with Rurira for standing him up.

It's called dissociative amnesia. It occurs when a person blocks out certain events, often associated with stress or trauma, leaving the person unable to remember important personal information. Given his child self's mind wasn't fully capable of grasping what most would qualify as actual trauma, it most likely thought her leaving without a word was traumatic. So to keep him functioning without having him eternally hung up on the past, his mind rewrote itself to forget all but the bare essentials of their time together. Namely that he was in the park and met someone he played with for a bit.
