The song is a reminder to be humble. Nothing we do or build will last. So don't obsess over earthly success. Don't obsess about fame and reknown because no matter what, we will eventually be forgotten and nothing of us will remain. Don't be consumed by the hoarding of money and things because you will die and leave it all behind. No matter who we are... rich, poor, famous, unknown, powerful, helpless, brave, cowardly, wise, foolish, clever, stupid... None of that matters. None of that makes anyone better or lesser, greater or smaller. We are all mortal, and we should remember that at all times. Because nothing at all will change that.

This song started as a finger-picking exercise for Kerry Livgren (the blond guy). His wife actually suggested he turn it into a song. Sadly, the violin player, Robby Steinhardt, passed away in July. Great choice for a reaction. Kansas is a great band and this song is a masterpiece.

"Kansas" is an incredibly talented band. Some other songs by them I recommend are: "Song for America", "The Wall", "Child of Innocence", "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel", and "Crossfire".

Gotta love that 70's hair! Just a beautiful song, though it can also be very sad.

For a more lively song that really showcases the band's talent, you may wish to try "Carry on My Wayward Son," by Kansas.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived in Nebraska, so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks, CA (God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way. FWIW gas cost only roughly $1.00 per gallon😁 On motorcycles. Hell yeah😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. "All your money won't another minute buy" 45+ years this still gets radio play on Classic Rock stations. I still have this LP./Album.

This was originally used as a practice/warm up riff. Not sure which band member. On hearing it, the other band members encouraged him to make it a song

Almost. It was Kerry Livgren's wife that kept telling him to turn it into a song.

Songs of that era were forced to be short in order to fit into radio programming.
