This win doesn't happen without Sherron Collins. Hit a tough layup while getting hammered by Rose, stole an inbound pass and then proceeded to hit the big 3, dribbled nearly the length of the court and laid it off to Chalmers for one of the biggest shots in college basketball history. His steal in OT then set up KU for a run that put them up for good. He didn't get nearly enough praise that he deserved but it was appreciated.
@LyonelDeLany Жыл бұрын
He did the crossover on Rose and he had the vision to let Jackson clear to the top of the key , and big thanks to Collins had he handed to Chalmers instead of flipped it to him , Chalmers may not have had the room to take the Shot ! Caliparis on record saying he directed Rose to foul Collins , but Collins was wayyyy to quick

as much as i love praising ku and chalmers. memphis shot themselves in the foot on this one. cant miss that many free throws in that close a ball game

I'm not quite old enough to remember the '88 championship, I can recall every season since the '91 title run that ended at the hands of duke. This was one of best feelings ever. To stick with a team after so many heartbreaking losses in the 90s and this decade and then to see them break through and win a championship like they did last year, that's what makes it worth being a die hard fan.

Memphis needed Larry Finch. He hit 11 of 13 free throws in the 1973 title game, which didn't stave off the great UCLA team. But in 2008, his savvy from the line would have done it.

In this March Madness, I picked Kansas vs. Memphis in the championship game with Kansas winning it all. I had $200 on the line with this game in a betting tournament and I almost turned the game off with 2 minutes to go and Kansas down 9 points. But then Arthur made the jumper and Collins made the clutch steal and 3-pointer. Still Memphis had to miss a couple of free throws and then Chalmers hit the most clutch shot I have ever seen. Then you knew that Kansas would win in overtime. Just godly...

When you have those late-game free throws, there is a hell of a lot more pressure on the shooter. You watch a game and tell: the atmosphere when they are 5 minutes into the 1st half and compare it to when a team is leading a basket with 30 seconds left in the game. You can't compare 'em, the team that can handle the pressure deserves to lose, as we saw Memphis crack under that pressure and lose.

If you make all your free throws (or shoot a high percentage like you should as a team, say 70% minimum plus the entire game), then you have those points to fall back on if things get ugly later, every bucket counts. This "stretch" talk to me is for dramatic purposes really, because everybody is up, excited, biting nails, its close and about to end, compared to the first few minutes of the game.

KU missed free throws too, just the way it goes, they all count, ones at the beginning, and end. I know one thing, one of the best, if not the best finishes of any Championship game in history. To me the save by a diving Collins to keep the ball in play was bigger than Chalmers shot. Because that wasn't the shocking part, because once Chalmers had the ball, you knew it was a done deal, Chalmers is like money in the bank when it comes to stepping up in situations like that.
