That's surely another reason why Em and Dre got on so well - apparently Em's just like that in the studio as well. There's a bunch of videos of people talking about Em mixing in the studio but one of the ones that stands out is Just Blaze comparing Jay and Em's processes. Jay will just lay his verse and tell the producer to do their thing whereas Em will come in and ask for the high-hat to be raised by 0.00000000037db and actually be able to hear the difference. You can also hear Dre's influence all over Em's productions. The instrumentals on The Eminem Show had their own flair to them that Dre wouldn't have produced but it very much sounds like a Dre engineered album with Em directing the production. Those drums especially sound like something right off of GRoDT and the rest of the stuff Dre was producing around that time (drums Khalil would go on to emulate pretty heavily) and just the overall heft to everything has Dre's influence shining through. Couldn't have picked a better mentor if he tried. I don't know if Em would have taken to a drum sampler like an MPC in the same way he did to using DAWs and a full mixing board so Dre was the perfect person to guide him in learning how to produce (or at least engineer something solid). He also had some amazingly skilled musicians in The Bass Brothers to be able to flesh out whatever ideas he had or a riff he had in his head and could only hum out. I wish he produced for others more. Can you imagine a J Cole album over Eminem production? Or Elzhi? or JR Writer? or JID? Or Tech? The two beats Em gave Jay were monstrous (Moment of Clarity being another example of that cleary Dre-influenced sound of Em's early productions) and I can picture him crafting an amazing sonic landscape for another artist.

The thing about The Machine ishe WAS about that life, but you can tell by his grind that he was a victim of circumstance and his braggadocio is only a result of surviving Buffalo. He puts out massive amount of work. He's like a Kiss in the early years, where the bars are Fuego, but the hooks aren't there.
