I toured Auschwitz (one of the camps) while in Europe and there were actual fingernail scratches 1/4 - 1/2 inches deep into the concrete as high as 8-10 feet from people climbing over people to try and escape in the gas chambers. And, in the 80s it still smelled like death and had a really overpowering sense of despair and depression that I still can feel when thinking about it today. They even slammed the doors and enacted what it was like to be in there right before the gas turned on the tour.
