It's a track I'll definitely do when I return to NZ early January. Tempting to continue on to other huts - Renata, Elder etc. but as always it's a challenge finding something where you can loop back to the car. I absolutely love the Tararuas (in good weather!) and can't wait to explore more of the area. Thanks for the video - it has inspired me!

Hi. Thanks for the great feedback. I have some videos on Renata hut, another great walk.. One day I will make it to Elder hut.

What was the track like to Renata? I guess it isn’t nearly as frequently used as the one to Kapakapanui - making it more attractive in some ways. I must look at your earlier video again.

Half of the track to Renata is up Odlins road, it then changes to a regular track. The track is well marked but is clearly less used than Kapapanui.

Actually I was thinking of a different approach: clockwise from the road (Ngatiawa Road I think) to maybe overnight at Kapakapanui hut, then continue to Maymom Junction to Renata Hut. From there...who knows. Elder isn't far and there are plenty of possibilities from there. I don't like walking on 4WD tracks even though they are fast and easy, hence choosing not starting where you did at Akatawara Saddle. What do you think of that idea?

I have never been from Kapakapanui Hut to Maymorn Saddle, but this sounds like a good trip. It is a very nice area.
