Very nice. I've been making 100% coconut soap for a few years here in Panama. I use oil that my neighbour makes by hand over an open fire (it smells beautifully smokey and is fabulous to cook with also). We have a river nearby with beautiful red clay and your video has inspired me to add a little to my batter. Thanks a lot for posting.

@hollysoapmaking6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I poured in increments because with this mold, pouring the in-the-pot swirl all at once tends to leave half the soap without any color or swirl. At least for me, anyway. @hollysoapmaking6 жыл бұрын
Cold process soap needs anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks to cure. By cure, it means for the water to evaporate and the bar to harden. Some people believe the soap is becoming milder over that time, as well. The harder the bar, the longer it will last for you when using it. Hope this helps! :)

@hollysoapmaking6 жыл бұрын
Cold process soap can be covered/insulated or placed in the fridge or freezer. It’s really just about whether you want the soap to go thru gel phase or not. Some recipes will get too hot and split if allowed to sit out (this particular one will even if uncovered and even in the fridge for me). Also, Some people just want a whiter soap, so they use the cold temps to avoid gel altogether. To keep this soap from overheating, I just placed it in the freezer. After the soap thawed, it was very hard and had to be cut. I let it cure for about 3 to 4 weeks. Thanks for asking. :) -Holly

Hi! I noticed that you soap the coconut oil and lye at 78°. I make this same soap between 100° and 110°. Is 78° better ?
@hollysoapmaking5 жыл бұрын
Not at all. I just like to soap around room temperature. It gives me a little longer working time for swirls, and the lower temp (combined with a water discount) can help me prevent gel if I ever want to do that. With this soap, it was really just about the convenience of preparing everything the night before and also doing the swirl. But really it’s just personal choice. Thanks for asking! :)

@hollysoapmaking5 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! Unfortunately, no, the lower temp doesn’t help me with ash. I wish it did! :) The only thing that helps me reduce ash is when I cover the soap immediately with a lid, wrap it in a blanket, and don’t even peek at it for 2 to 3 days. That way, saponification is pretty much complete, and there’s no excess sodium hydroxide left to react with carbon dioxide in the air. :)

How do you wrap these and keep them from melting so fast because coconut oil gets liquidy really quickly in warm environments

They're not soft like the coconut oil is in the beginning. The oil and lye water have a chemical reaction to make soap, just like a normal bar of soap you buy at the store. She put it in the freezer to keep it from getting too hot during the chemical reaction, not to solidify the oil.

This is so inspiring! I have never made soap because I am afraid of lye, with a child around. Can I buy it already made to just mix with the oils/fat?

that's my problem was the thickening causing overload out the molds, so im going to go up on water amounts, that's probably what's causing it to rise out your molds....
