Loom weaving was practiced on Kapingamarangi Atoll, a Polynesian island in the Micronesian region until WWII. This technology was originated from Island Southeast Asia and spread to many Micronesian islands and some Melanesian islands, including Polynesian islands in the two regions. The technique, however, was quickly died out after the introduction of European cloth on many islands, although it is still practiced on many islands in Chuuk and Yap States.
When NGO Pasifika Renaissance Executive Director Takuya Nagaoka was a JOCV volunteer, working at the Pohnpei Historic Preservation Office (HPO) in 1992, he met Huodi (Paul) Gamure, who was 79 years old (passed away in 1993), and still remembered how to weave a cloth on a loom. It was very fortunate that Takuya could document Huodi’s knowledge and held its classes at Pohnrakied, Kapaingamarangi settlement in Pohnpei as HPO’s projects, although the latter’s main purpose of passing down this dying art to the next generation was not successful and no Kapaingamarangi person knows how to do it now. This video filmed by Takuya in 1992 is held at the College of Micronesia-FSM. The footage includes: preparing of a warp beam and hibiscus strips, setting up warp and loom, and weaving. We would like to thank the late Mr. Gamure, Pohnpei HPO and the COM, which gave us permission to share this video here. Humalia goe!
