Мне нравится, что молодые пианисты берут на вооружение произведения Капустина, полные оптимизма, животворящей эгергии, вписывающихся в скоростной режим нашего времени, популяризируя их для широкой публики.

Hi! I’m 16 years old and I really like the sound of Kapustin. This group of etudes is special to me; I especially like the third one. The reason I know of Kapustin is that a Japanese jazz group called ‘Mouse on the keys’ did a rendition of that third etude and when I did some research into it, I found the rest of this set and I love it! I’m a hobbyist composer myself and this kind of jazzy, intricate style is exactly the kind of thing I’d love to learn how to emulate in my own work.

yet another criminally underrated 20th century composer. one with no qualms about fully embracing tonality. this music is unabashedly pretty and harmonically luxuriant, but perhaps still too complex and idiosyncratic for the average everyday music fan who lack an appetite for such a vigorous dismantling of artificial boundaries. he is neither traditionalist nor modernist; too jazzy to be 'classical' but far too formally complex to be labelled 'jazz.' Oddly enough, his kaleidoscopic compositional signature, with its fine-grained juxtaposition of "high" and "low," "popular" and "academic" styles, delivered with such ebullient rapid-fire virtuosity, calls to mind 1970s rock bands like Emerson Lake and Palmer, who combined Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Ginastera (!) -- and others -- with elements of jazz, boogie-woogie, hard rock and blues. Everytime I hear his music I can't help but notice this (most likely completely accidental) parallel. They probably never even heard of each other, otherwise I bet they would have adapted some of his work as they did with their weird and wonderful reimagining of Ginastera's "toccata": kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5jEdoeHnZmojsk

I think his "grumpy cat look" was a look of fear. Loving something as American as jazz is dangerous in present-day Russia. The KGB almost killed Shostakovich who was Russian from head to toe. What would they do with Kapustin and his fascination for American jazz? That was a look of fear and my heart goes out to this courageous composer who had a "soft spot" for America and its jazz! I am surprised he lasted as long as he did.

@@bachplayer13 Interesting. I didn't realize this! I guess this is why he didn't go on world tours because he certainly could have! His music is fresh, exciting and new! His jazz is authentic, compelling, and magnificent! Buried in Russia, I am afraid his reluctance to travel outside of Russia helped the eventual "demise" of jazz! When I see pictures of him, I note a "scared", unhappy look about him. Perhaps it was difficult living in Russia having an American skill???
