I think the only reason she has been hired for that part was about showing to the world that the state and locality have not passed laws explicitly prohibiting gender identity of discrimination. However, i understand completely that’s her equal right not to be fired or refused a job just because she’s a transgender. Prejudging an individual by her gender identity is not only unethical it is blatantly irrational.

It was amazing to see this reciprocated between Nia and young Kara this season. You know what I find frustrating though? If the writers cut out all the huge speeches I think the goodness and hope they always tell us Kara embodies would shine through much clearer. Just look at how pure and good she comes across when she’s just having this dynamic with Nia, outside of any grand speeches or life-threatening events. No need to tell us how she embodies hope and love-she just does.
