My grandparents, Guy and Irene Keller, were married on October 17,1922 in the abandoned Methodist Church in Monowi. (The church you visited.) Guy Keller drove the fuel truck out of Mulhairs Mobil Station in Lynch, Nebraska, until his death in 1966.On vacations, I rode with him, and we often stopped at the Monowi Tavern on his trips to fill farmers tanks on outlying farms. My father left Lynch on June 6, 1941 to join the United States Coast Guard and made that his career., never returning to live in the area. This is why I love your videos! Yes, watching the extremely physical challenges, seeing the beautiful landscapes of the world and being along with you both as you try new things is great, but underneath it what I admire about you both is that you are willing to sit and listen to people. You are willing to see their point of view. You are respectful to the people you meet. And I can tell that you take care as filmmakers and that you understand the responsibilities of documentation. I am grateful that there are people like Kara and Nate out in the world!

The house that was mostly intact was oddly disturbing... something unsettling about seeing all those belongings just left there. Doesn't even look like it was abandoned for that long. I wonder what the story behind it is. Also Elsie is a legend! I'm not a bar guy or anything but I've been to one similar to hers (also solely operated by an 80 something year old woman, lol) and it's just a great atmosphere.

My parents live in Freetown, Indiana. They town can't afford to incorporate so they are considered a Village. The elementary school and bank closed. The post office is open mornings. They do have a few tiny businesses locally owned and a little museum. It does not have a police department. If it floods or snows too much its likely you are stuck for awhile. Recently a Dollar General opened and provides some groceries and essentials. There are a few churches for those who enjoy sharing worship with the community. My father has a tiny congregation at his church down the street from where he and my mom live. They have been there over 15 years now. It's an interesting and quaint community. Might be an interesting place for you to visit.
