The Karaboaz protected area, which extends to approx. 137 square kilometers, includes sand dunes and alluvial sediments, distributed only in floodplain areas along the Danube. Unfortunately, most of the dunes have been plowed and cultivated, and the specific flora has been destroyed due to agricultural activities, urbanization or illegal sand extractions. Also cattle grazed in this area, contributing to the degradation of the area. Among the rare and protected species are Centaurea arenaria, Allium angulosum, Tragopogon (endemic to the Danube river basin). For conservation purposes, Karaboaz area was included in the European Ecological Network programme NATURA 2000 - Bulgaria.
