Error message: Unable to obtain connection: Cannot create PoolableConnectionFactory (The authentication type 10 is not supported. While publishing raster in geoserver select reproject native to declared...option....in native give epsg code of raster projection and in declared give EPSG:3857

base layer is basemap for your webGIS on which your layers will be overlayed, you dont have to download just you have to give link for the base layers to add as WMS layer in WebGISi.e There are many Base maps available i.e OSM, Bing, Google, Mapquesr etc.

if you have several layers for the same area like roads, train tracks, hotels, schools how do you publish that?

You can put all the shapefiles in one folder and publish by creating new store (Option: directory of spatial files) and publish all the layers one by one... Also you can import all your shapefiles in Postgis database(single) and then by creating new store in geoserver (option: postgis) and then publishing all layers one by one..

U need to import shape file in postgres database using postgis extension..and then u can make a layer in geoserver....also, one can directly create layer (kml/ gml/geojson) from postgres/postgis database using jsp or php scripting. And then publish on web using openlayers API...

One can use Image mosaic or geopackage raster data store in geoserver for publishing the multiple rasters. You can check following link: docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/data/raster/imagemosaic/tutorial.html
