In our continued effort to show that karate isn't just kicking and punching, we showcase the different parts of the body used for combat.
We are a group on a mission to return Karate to its roots through the use of Kata as self-defense.

Always great to see karateka that really understand the art. Kata is the encyclopedia of karate but its full beauty is seen when the practitioners understand how to apply the techniques. You have added to my research of kata by your many post. Keep up the good work guys.

Wow.. great video! Opened my eyes wide to the street fight application of the discipline. Very awesome video.. i would love, love to see more along this line of video. I love the showing of the move (the dance) then the application of that move in actual hand to hand, then the defense and the counter .. very damn cool!! Good job!

I've been meaning to ask, is there a particular school of karate you two come from? I ask because I really like what you do, and the way you train, and almost every other karate demonstration I see is totally different (and frankly, terrible). Thanks for the great videos!

thanks for the question! So we're actually ranked in Shorinkan shorin ryu but our sensei was a very practical karate guy, he's a retired green beret and border patrol officer so he would always tell us of kata applications he used in the field while on the job. So that really put a different appreciate of karate in our heads, that's what we represent now through these videos

Not sure, maybe some type of outside wrist lock? We kind of just do the techniques that we found works

Thanks for replying! Hmmm to me it looks like the slight bend of the elbow is being used as leverage to articulate a shoulderlock. Maybe some additional force is being used to help drop the body down as well. It looks very novel which is why I asked.

I haven't taken karate in almost 20 years , but if I was taught to do it the way you guys do it I would have never stopped. you guys are the truth. Since then i've studied judo, jujitsu aikido , boxing and jeet kundo, but the practical application of the stand up you guys show, has them all beat (with the exception of boxing, my favorite) .

It sounds like you've had an amazing martial journey! we were shown this conceptual approach to karate and from then on we've wanted to share it to as many people as possible. We really believe this is how martial arts/karate should be taught, rather than just kicking and punching. Thanks for the comment, and we're humbled by your kind words!

I can't be certain (i've never trained with these men) but to my eye it's Morote Uchi Uke or augmented block, first performed in Heian Ni Dan (Shotokan syllabus). This is proof there's much more to Morote Uchi Uke than the initial 'reinforced block' taught while learning how to perform the technique classically so it's nice and crisp. Though classical karate is effective thus worthwhile (basic technique works under stress) this is much more like the pragmatic kumite Funakoshi sensei wrote of rather than the glorified game of tag competition karate has become. I imagine Funakoshi sensei would cringe if he were to see Olympic style competition karate. Respect to these karateka for keeping the practical pragmatic art alive.
@karateculture

totally! that's a reinforced "block", we should really go away from naming a block though haha
