Why Your Timing to Attack Is Wrong

Timing is a crucial component in kumite. Even if your punch/kick is fast, precise, and powerful, without the correct timing, it won't reach the opponent.
I've taken 4 types of timing.
0:51 Before the Opponent Attacks
10:59 When the Opponent Starts Moving
15:40 When the Opponent Finishes Attacking
20:18 After the Opponent Finishes Attacking

I'm an old-school karateka (and I'm old). After almost 50 years of mostly freestyle (non-stopping) type of kumite, it's hard to change the way I think about fighting. This is the first video that brought together in one place all of the basic concepts of sport kumite that I've been missing. I learned a lot! Thank you sensei!

You covered a lot of sparring basics in this video. I really enjoyed the tip about putting the hand first. I think that could help my speed even more.

how does that work though. If I'm thinking about point karate, wont the idea of hand first decrease power and thus less chance of point? I mean, I feel like the hand will be finished moving before you reach your target, thus suboptimal timing?

Same man. I lost even though I had the shenshu. The score was 4-3 and it was the last 10 secs of the bout and I missed my Kizami zuki and lost. Hopefully I will better my timing soon. My sensei was so disappointed bro.

Do you always want to have the same leg forwards that they do? So if they have their left leg foward you want your left leg foward? I come across people who will keep changing which leg they have foward.
@KarateDojowaKu
@KarateDojowaKu 3 жыл бұрын
Personally , I prefer having the left forward, but it's better if you can switch so it gets confusing for the opponent!

30 years ago when I was in karate competitions, I used to score a lot with a back hand. Is it still a valid technique? Your double punch was my lead attack, and then I'd go over the top with a backhand to the head as the 3rd technique.

Great video! I find trouble to go back to my position after attacking during kumite. I tend to use my quadriceps strength instead my calves and I get very slow trying to push my own momentum. Any help here, plz, workout, technique...

Push off your toes, then calf then quads...just like using exlplosiveforce during differential rotation while generating torque and leverage in punches..takes time to be able to successfully perform kinetic chains while striking The concept is the same while moving explosively just not to the same degree.

Why bounce?
@N3onDr1v3
@N3onDr1v3 4 ай бұрын
Generally its so that you can already be moving when you attack or counter attack. It allows you to generally move around and react faster. Though, inertia is a thing so as you come down on your bounce, for that fractiom of a second, it is harder tp move/react

for that kind of attack the defender must react by moving laterally to let the attacker almost by-pass him. the problem of retreating backward is that is the direction of the attack.
