Just a side note. I am a Prime member of Amazon. My voltage here is 220 volts. I was going to purchase the K5 from them but after contacting Karcher they recommended not using a voltage converter from 220 to 120 volts because it could damage the pump and void the warranty. Amazon only sells 120 volt units.

It is caused by water freezing inside during the winter - As it expands it splits the plastic. I always unplug the hosepipe and run the machine til water stops coming out before you put it back in the shed. I have never had problems since using this technique.

Great video, many thanks. I've watched a couple of these videos and a common theme is blue aftermarket hoses! My K4 has just started leaking on first use of a blue aftermarket hose and short trigger gun. I'm guessing they have more back pressure. I'll be pulling mine apart in the week. 👍
@SwiftDevelopments4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback. Regarding the hose, it shouldn't have more backpressure, unless the hose bore is noticeably thinner. With mine, before the aftermarket hose, once you'd let go of the trigger, the pump would recharge the hose before stopping with a short pssst. After installing the 10m blue hose, when recharging it now makes a longer psssssssst noise, presumably because there is more volume to pressurise between the pump and gun and/or because the hose wall is more flexible when compared to the Karcher supplied hose. I thought this might make it easier on the pressure pump if it's coming to a more gradual stop, although I could be wrong! Good luck with your pressure washer repair.

I followed your video to fix my K4. First of all, I have noticed that all the K4s are not visually the same, depending on input voltage. Mine is a 220 volt model. Also I have seen other K4s that have different outer shells. The interior is almost identical. My leak is not coming from the same location (the top plastic tube). It is a high pressure leak under the head on top of the pump. I l took the 4 large (machine) screws out and slightly pull the head up and saw some oil starting to come out so I stopped at that point and re-screwed the top housing back on. The leak is coming from between one of the plastic columns seen through the opening on top of the pump under the top plate. Of course, you can't get the small metal top off without pulling the entire top off the pump. Long story short. I have ordered a new 220 volt K5. If you or one of your followers has a solution to fix this I will attempt the fix again. However, I am sure replacing the pump would be as expensive as buying a new K4. Thanks for your help.

I have bought 3 pressures washers over three years. Suspect for any washer is the aluminum/zinc die cast housing used, which is subject to corrosion and a frozen pump. I got one season out of the first two washers. Go to use it the next year and "ZERO". Lock up. Looking at the inlets there was corrosion all over the casting. Comes the third pressure washer. On the first two I used the flush and store system liquid through the pump and put it away for winter. That didn't work. Third washer, put hydraulic tool oil (4-5 table spoons) into the water inlet and ran the pump for about 10 seconds. It flushed out water and left an oil film in the pump. I have had this last pressure washer 3 years now and it starts up every year after winter. And the pressure is still strong. Frankly, I think these manufactures should be coating the die cast housings with corrosion resistant coating. I am a product engineer of 45 years, and designed automotive parts with corrosion resistant coatings to withstand freezing rain, heat, and road salts. I can tell you I never went back to the manufactures washers that only lasted one season. My current washer is a Sun Joe and it is holding up.....with the oil purge included.
@SwiftDevelopments6 ай бұрын
You list some valid points; they do seem to struggle selecting the correct materials/coatings for the job to ensure longevity. One of the things people often forget to do (myself included on occasions) is discharging the pressure washer before storing it away; you would think they could build in a relief valve or something to compensate for this. I’ve never thought to use hydraulic oil like you have; at some point I plan on opening up the pump to inspect the condition of the internal parts for wear and corrosion.

This is really helpful, thank you, I will follow this to hopefully fix our Karcher. I have this issue for the second time on my pressure washer... the first time it was fixed in the warranty with no comments on how it happened, what went wrong or how could it have been prevented. The fault reappeared only a few months after the issue was fixed the first time, however this time its out of warranty and the customer services are saying that I have caused the problem myself by using AutoStop type of hose connector. It's very irritating as the first time it happened it has not been pointed out and I have never realised that Autostop connectors could cause any problems. In the video, your connector looks like my Autostop one, so just a heads up in case you are still using it. Thanks for the guide.
@SwiftDevelopments11 ай бұрын
I don't agree with Karcher trying to explain away that the issue is to do with Aquastop/Autostop hosepipe connectors causing this; this injection moulded plastic elbow is after the pump has pressurised the water supply. If an Aquastop connector was starving the pump of water, this would only lead to reduced flow/pressure after the pump. Unfortunately I think this part is just prone to failure by the way it has been manufactured; instead, try ordering the metal variant of this part which I've listed in the video description.
@6mabel47 ай бұрын
Teach your audience the correct discharge procedure before shutting down, most of these failures are due to frozen pumps in winter because they don’t pump out water before shutting down.

Thx for the info…. Not sure, but I can imagine the crack may have resulted due to excessive pulling strain on the high pressure hose. Some folks like to tug on it dragging the entire pressure washer a few feet or so to continue their work…
@SwiftDevelopments9 ай бұрын
There’s a possibility that dragging the pressure washer with the hose could put stain on this part, although it is locked in place with the rear L shaped bracket that sticks out from the back. I think the most probable reason is down to the injection moulding process creating a weak point, constantly put under strain each time the part is pressurised during use.

Thanks for a really helpful video. Tt made taking my K4 apart really simple. However, my leak is coming from elsewhere so I'm wondering if you or anyone can please provide advice as neither Karcher (who only want me to send it for an expensive repair or buy a new washer) nor several spares companies seem willing to do so. My K4 started pulsating when I power it on and the pressure is very weak when I press the trigger on the lance. I can’t see any leaks at all when a hose is connected with the water tap on (with the yellow case removed). However, when I turn on the power, a lot of water sprays from near the top of the washer control head (where the chemical tube attaches) so I assume this is where the K4 is losing pressure. There don’t seem to be leaks from anywhere else. I’ve taken the K4 apart and found 2 connected parts (Washer control head and cylinder head) . The control head has 9.075.073.0 and 9.075.072.0 printed on it. The cylinder head looks different inside to the spares on several supplier websites in that I have 3 small white plastic pieces with springs in the top of the cylinder head, instead of one larger white piece. Is this a one with the single white central piece a replacement? Do I need to order the cylinder head as well as the control head (where the leak is)? Anything else? Sorry for the 'wordy' description but I can't attach photos. TIA

Thanks for watching and commenting. If you watch this Karcher video where I take the pump apart: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJO0h4aAdqqAaas It provides more detailed shots for comparison and to assess and highlight where the leak is coming from. @JonathanPinnock-mn3bm3 ай бұрын
@@SwiftDevelopments thanks very much for that and another great video. I've liked and subscribed. At 9.55 in that video, you remove a metal retaining plate and the "head". That "head" actually comprises 2 parts, the "cylinder head" and the 'manifold and pressure piston' (or 'control head' ) although I haven't seen you separating them in your videos. The leak I have seems to come from about 15mm below the right-angled pressure piston (where the small clear plastic tube connects) on the control head. Water sprays out from there (only when the K4 in powered on) where there is a cutout at the end of the metal retaining plate. Its hard to be precise because I can't have that metal plate removed whilst the machine is running so I can't see all the control head. I've looked carefully with a magnifying glass with the machine disassembled and the only thing I can see is what looks like a scratch around the area where the spray seems to come from. I have videos of the spray but can't send on here. * I should also note that my K4 has part number 1.324-009.0 on it rather than 1.324-002.0. * I was going to order a replacement control head (my part has number 9.075-073.0 on it) but it seems different inside from the one here www.spares2you.co.uk/karcher-k3-k4-pressure-washer-control-head/ even though that has the same part number. Mine has a triangular cover inside (with 3 small raised circles) which prises off to reveal a spring, a white item and something yellow behind that. The cover may be called the ("head joining piece" www.spares2you.co.uk/karcher-cylinder-head-joining-piece/). My cylinder head also looks different inside from the one advertised here www.spares2you.co.uk/karcher-pressure-washer-cylinder-head/ even though the website says its compatible with my K4 model number. Instead of the one large central white plastic piece shown in the picture, mine has 3 small springs with small white plastic pieces underneath them, arranged in a triangle to match the 3 raised circles on the "head joining piece" in the control head. So, I think I need the 'manifold and pressure piston' (or 'control head' ) as that's where I believe the leak is from. But, do I also need a new cylinder head (with the central white piece instead of the 3 small springs) to match it, or can I remove the "head joining piece" from my current control head and put it into the new control head (with spring and whatever the white item is behind it - both are removable)? I guess I could try just with the control head first but don't really want to keep spending on spares if the K4 ultimately isn't repairable due to design changes/parts shortages etc. I sure wish I could send photos! Sorry for the long post and thanks again

@@JonathanPinnock-mn3bm, you could always upload a video to your KZbin account and then I could take a look at your setup (in the KZbin app, select the plus icon from the bottom menu, then select Video and you can upload it from there). 1.324-009.0 is the K4 Full Control Car and Home model, the one ending in '2' is the Full Control without the patio cleaner, brush and foam cannon attachments. On: www.spares2you.co.uk/k-4-full-control-car-home-1.324-009.0/ I think the diagram under the heading ‘Pump WCM Plastic (HR) New’ shows the inner parts connecting to the control head. I think it is definitely reparable, it’s just narrowing down which part(s) you need. I think from what you describe, it reads like you need the control head at (£27.89). As far as I can tell, the cylinder head design hasn’t changed; Karcher did revise the pressure switch design in the control head (what I serviced in my latest video), in an attempt to make that more reliable. It looks like you already have this same part number (the previous design was 9.002-029.0).

Thanks for this! Just one issue. I am struggling to get that c clip as you call it, to fit back through the holes. I have fully greased it up but no joy. It looks like it isnt in line when putting it back on rather than just requiring lubrication. Any ideas?
@SwiftDevelopments6 ай бұрын
Can you see straight through like you can in my video? If not, something might not be seated properly so it lines up. Try removing the black L shaped bracket that the C clip pushes into. If the metal pipe isn’t sticking out of the casing far enough, the pump might not be seated correctly in the case. Let me know how you get on.
@rickphelan54386 ай бұрын
@@SwiftDevelopments So there seems to be some wiggle room for the metal pipe to adjust within the inside of the plastic housing. When not fitted to the pressure washer I can get the c clip to slot in fine. But when I try twisting the plastic big handle back into the housing of the washer this is when things are out of line. It's as though the metal piece is getting forced away from the pressure washer so then can't line up when trying to re attach everything
@SwiftDevelopments6 ай бұрын
@@rickphelan5438Do you think the black plastic elbow from the pump head on the inside is not seating inside the metal connector on the big L handle on the outside? You mention it feels like it is pushing it away, could this be what is doing it? When you take the back casing of the pressure washer off, does the big L handle slot into the pump head elbow ok and line up for the C clip to be inserted?

Hi. If you cannot disconnect the hose after removing the spring clip, you should still be able to dismantle it with the hose still attached to the back foot. 20min 10sec onwards in the video shows the best view of the hose connector in case that helps you understand how it might be getting stuck. The back foot assembly is part number 4.100-775.0 in case you damage that and need to purchase a replacement. Good luck!

Hi @davidmason4084, yes you should be able to open it up to fix the dispenser. It is mounted to the yellow front part of the body. Disassemble following my video, then you will be able to easily get to the dispenser part to reattach it (if something has snapped and it cannot be glued, you can order it as a spare part). Google 'Karcher Solution Docking Station Complete' if you need to order the part (if it is the same model as mine).

I've not worked on a K5 before, but what you describe could be to do with the pump cylinder head not sealing to create the pressure it needs. Try searching for that to see if you can find similar symptoms to what you are experiencing. Hope this helps.

@SwiftDevelopments8 ай бұрын
Hi, I’m not entirely sure what you’re asking because it looks like autocorrect replaced part of your message. The elbow that connects to the pressure hose does have an O ring which seals between that and the black elbow I replaced, it is then secured in place with the metal staple shaped pin that locks it into place. Hope this helps.

I plan to buy K4 for occasional car and yard washing. How long did you use the washing machine before this failure occurred? Would you recommend buying the K4 or would you pay extra for the K5?
@SwiftDevelopments Жыл бұрын
I’ve had my K4 about six years before this happened. It has been kept in the garage (to prevent frost splitting pipes during winter months), I use it to wash two cars on average three times a month, then clean a patio with it annually. I’m happy with it, although I have been looking at Ava pressure washers that come with a 20 year warranty to replace it (I want one with a hose reel to make it easier to pack away and store). The K5 is slightly more powerful, aside from that I imagine construction will be very similar to the K4.
@ivosimic11 ай бұрын
You are wrong. K5 is far better product then K4. It has aluminium pump head while on K4 is entirely made of plastic.
@ericstockmann248711 ай бұрын
Does this model come with a plastic water pump? I don’t find any information. I remember speaking with a Karcher repair guy that told me that the K5 is the only one with an aluminum water pump.
@SwiftDevelopments11 ай бұрын
Yes, the Pressure Washer Control Head in the K5 is of all-metal construction compared to the K4 which is plastic encased in metal. I’m presuming this is most likely so the K5 can run at its increased pressure and flow rate. Saying the K5 is better is speculative. It is 50% more expensive than the K4, so it comes down to how someone intends to use it and whether they need the increased pressure capabilities for the additional expense (and marginally increased running costs from a higher wattage motor). Karcher doesn’t list MTBF rates for each machine, so reliability cannot be assumed from the more expensive model (although you’d like to hope so). Tolerances might be similar relative to their operating pressures and what those tolerances are for each model.
@thepub24511 ай бұрын
I have owned many Karcher pressure washers over the years and I have to say that they do not seem to be the most reliable of things, you're lucky to get a couple of years out of them before they start playing up. I never let my machines freeze in cold weather either. I can't say a machine made by any other brand are any better. In my experience, the bigger the model, the more unreliable it is. I am in the process of trying to fix a K4, at the minute that was pulsating and pishing water out the bottom. There doesn't appear to be any leak as in this video but haven't checked with the machine switched on yet. New pump head for my model appears to be £73, which is a bit steep.

I thought those red auto lock hose connectors damaged the pumps on these?
@SwiftDevelopments11 ай бұрын
They don’t recommend them because the flow rate might be restricted which could starve the pressure washer. I tested it first by spraying the pressure washer into a bucket and timed how long it took to fill it up. I then fitted the Hozelock Aqua Stop and tested again. I didn’t notice a difference so use it to easily swap between the pressure washer and spray gun.

It should be replaced under warranty. This particular part is injection moulded which creates a weak point down the seam. I would expect Karcher will just replace it or ask you to take it to one of their service centres to get it fixed without charge.

@SwiftDevelopments6 ай бұрын
My machine is usually discharged after use and this part failed in October, when the lowest temperature recorded on my garage thermometer in the 6 months prior was 12 degrees. With these elbows being injection moulded, I think it is only a matter of time before they split considering the pressures they are subjected to.

@davidholmes34497 ай бұрын
This is what happends when u use an aqua stop hose fitting the pressure gets trapped in the machine and can crack internal components
@SwiftDevelopments7 ай бұрын
The advice is not to use AquaStop valves because they can starve the pump of water if they restrict the recommended flow rate. This particular issue is after the pump has pressurised the water, so it has no bearing on the issue. Relieving pressure in the hose and pipe after use before packing away will help prevent this part splitting. Also ensuring the pressure washer doesn’t freeze in winter should ensure water in the plastic parts doesn’t expand and crack the seams.
