Lyrics: “Wait by the river.” “Something has changed. Something is different, I know. Where have you gone? It’s getting dark. Was I left behind? You’re far away! Where have you gone?” Fear. Child hardened by snow. Given up to the cold. “Where have you gone? It’s getting dark.” “Follow along the riverbed. You’ll find her waiting there. Breathe into your hands.” She yields to the ground. White breath above A quickly waking ghost. She knows This is the last moon. This is the last time she’ll lie awake Screaming out. Asking forgiveness. “Mother! Please come back!” “What did I do?” “Why did she leave?” “I didn’t mean to…” “I’ll do better, I swear!” “It's my fault!” “She did this to herself!” Was I left behind? You’re far away. This is my fault. I will be fine. Where have you gone? You’re far away.

As a relatively new father, and someone with aging parents, I've been thinking a lot about death, my child's possible/potential pain in their life, and "Torch passing" as a concept. Because of that, this album, and especially this song, hits me right in the heart and soul, so much so that I have a hard time listening to it (in the best possible way). I've always believed that the typical tools of heavy music, like blast beats and harsh vocals, when "performed" rather than just "played" can be one of the most powerful ways to express painful emotions through music. I think that this band is one of the first that I've found who has adopted and ran with this philosophy. This music is DRIPPING with empathy. It's an incredible step, for all of heavy music, towards artistic legitimacy in our society at large for these type of soundscapes. Really amazing stuff. Album of the year for me!

"Such a gorgeous piece of music & now who'd have thought metal could be described like that" a lot of people fail to tap into or appreciate the true potential of metal because they either don't encounter or don't recognize the beauty and emotion it can capture. Some of my absolute favorite metal bands, artists, and songs, tap into that side of metal a fair amount. Orbit Culture, Ne Obliviscaris, Shadow of Intent, and Justin Bonitz (Hungry Lights) are some of my favorite examples of artists who often do a great job of making very emotional and/or beautiful metal, all in very different and unique ways. A few song recommendations from each of these: Flight of the Fireflies, The Newborn One Forget Not, Eyrie Underneath a Sullen Moon, Farewell Constancy, Fate Won't Pull Me Under

The drummers time signatures on that whole opening part puts an unsettling feeling to the song. It's chaotic almost sounding out of time with the guitar riffs.
