I don’t think you can say that other reactions are necessarily dishonest. I’ve seen quite a few where it’s clear to me that the reviewer is pretending to be shocked (click bait). But classical voice teachers don’t always listen to metal, and so this kind of thing can legitimately take them by surprise. My background is more mainstream rock/pop/r&b, with lots of opera and musical theater, and I literally had never heard a woman make that kind of sound before-and I’ve been around awhile.
@DroctorKloebner3 жыл бұрын
@@lkayh yeah but the majority of these people aren't vocal tachers, they are youtubers who earn money with clicks and they know exactly what they're doing. given how old this song is by now literally every youtuber who does reaction videos has at least heard about it or even seen it before.
@lkayh3 жыл бұрын
@@DroctorKloebner I guess KZbin is very selective about what hits my feed, probably because I’m pretty selective about what I click on. For the most part when it comes to unique vocalists like Tati, Diana Ankudinova, Dimash (JEEZ!), Sohyang, etc., I prefer to hear from vocal coaches and musicians who know what is happening and can give informed explanations and opinions. And when something legitimately takes them by surprise, it’s really fun to see. Anyway, I don’t see or click on a lot of reaction vids if seems like the reactor won’t understand the skill and technique behind what they’re hearing.

I like Jinjer, and I've watched a few vocal coach reactions to the transition in Tatiana's singing. It's nice for a cheap laugh to see people who are blown away by a woman producing a metal scream/growl. It's a refreshing and good thing that I can also see a metal vocalist breaking down what she is actually singing, not just the fact that 'wymen can't scream, what is this' Thank you
@alondite2154 жыл бұрын
Nice to see a vocal coach reaction where the coach actually understands what she's doing to produce her growls/screams. So many others are absolutely dumbfounded by her distortion technique. Now can you tell me what the hell Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die is doing? Because he sounds incredible but it doesn't sound like any technique I'm familiar with, or least not when he performs it.
@bepkororoti80194 жыл бұрын
He's doing fry screams or more like what is known as "heat", so voice with (a lot of) distortion, the singer of rise against does the same thing and the dude of anti flag, as well. Although I'm not really sure where the distortion really comes from physically, maybe it's just the flappy stuff like the soft palet and the false chords?
@sebarhap4 жыл бұрын
There's a thing called arytenoid distortion, it's what Tool does, and Chester Bennington. Andrew Sowthworth has demonstrated this type of distortion before in his how to rasp and high scream tutorials. Maybe it's what you are looking for.

Great getting a perspective from someone who knows the growling side - subbed. It would be great to get your analysis of one of their songs where she uses her low growls too - Who Is Gonna Be The One official live or Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev. I've felt like I was hearing that transition between false cord growls and fry screams in those because she starts ramping up to the scream from a much lower growl in both of those. Of the two I'd prefer Pit Of Consciousness since it is newer and her voice is always growing in power. Cheers!
@williamreynolds34874 жыл бұрын
Don’t know why I was paying more attention to the instruments than the vocals during a vocal analysis, but damn that snare is nice. Edit: And yes, that bridge sounds a lot like Opeth. Really cool. So does the very end imo. It sounds like a guitar riff Mikael would write.

One thing I like about this song is that most of the way through, every element of it is really clean. The drums, the guitar, her vocals, all of it-you can clearly hear what everyone is doing. Most metal (to me-I’m not a metal head) is “noisy.” There might be some really brilliant work happening, but it’s all layered over each other to the point where I can’t really process any of it. That may actually be what metal heads DO like, but it’s just not my thing. It might have to do with the way my ADD works-too much all at once and my brain goes into overload. Everyone in this video is exceptionally talented, and the way this music is laid out I get to hear and appreciate all of it. I tried some other Jinjer videos and so far what I’ve heard falls more into the “noisy” category for me, but this piece works for me.

It sure sounds like false chord screaming, at least in the low lows, but I'm not sure how she then manages to sing phrases that long, eg in Perennial Live at Wacken, there are physical limits, unless she's attempting to break free from the matrix. It sometimes sounds like she's doing both techniques at once, maybe she has that sweet spot where she can bring her false chords to sympathetic resonance with the fry scream underneath? In Who Is Gonna Be the One Live you can also kind of hear what sounds like a normal vocal fold voice layered underneath but this is so low it's most likely not a pitch her vocal folds would be able to produce judging from her speaking voice, could be the sympathetic resonance frequency of her wind pipe. She is pretty unique, I don't know anybody else who sounds like her.
