I went to a school in a VERY wealthy district, the school officials knew not everybody could always afford a school lunch so they provided for the less affluent children. Usually, we were the children of the domestic staff, the gardeners and the workers at the various businesses in town. Decades later, one day when I was doing some gardening alone, I ran across some very vicious characters in the process of abducting two young women in a wealthy neighborhood. I almost lost my life, but I fought-off the attackers and held them at bay until the Police arrived. I was able to become a healthy, law-abiding citizen with a good attitude because I was treated very well, and fed, in the same affluent town where I ended up working. I AM an example of what good can come of taking care of less fortunate children, -an equatable society where people CARE about one another.

My last year in high school was in the state of Georgia, this was the last year they had the free school lunch program Nationwide, I naively thought that it would continue after that year because everyone benefited, every student in that school was able to get lunch and there were plenty of students that I knew would not have been able to get lunch consistently without it, I am fortunate enough to have a family that was able to not only just consistently afford it anyway but also made school lunch for my siblings after that policy expired, there are countless other students who are not that lucky.

The parents are not there to see what their child is eating which takes away from what the parent may think is best for their child to eat. So there are pros and cons to this. Ultimately the taxpayers pay for it whether they have children or not.

I think the red flag here is that it’s not “free” it’s payed with taxpayer money. While I’m not against it as you pay for schools anyway - and it’s nice to see it in a meaningful way. I just know my taxes have gone up
