Today we get to Interview First Karen Naturopathic Doctor Naw Pakamwee.
1. Hello everyone, my name is Naw Pakamwee. I come from Umphiem refugee camp, Thailand and move to Unite State of American in July 2010. I want to say a special thanks to Karen number 1TV for allowing me to share my journey though Naturopathic medical school.
2. What inspired me to become naturopathic medical doctor is the Karen people. My people need someone who can help and teach them about diseases and health. Since we are living in other countries, it is hard to understand and communicate with other health professionals who can’t communicate with us and understand our needs for health.
3. Naturopathic medical doctor mostly focusses on treating the whole person, identify and treating the root causes of disease, healing power of nature, doctor as teacher, and prevention. NMD spend at least 45 minutes to an hour in consultation compared to MD. We explore other options before giving medications or providing surgical procedures. We also allow the clients to choose various treatments methods that work best for them individually.
4. To become naturopathic medical doctor, you need to have undergraduate degree (which is a 4-year college/university). We have a verity of people with different backgrounds going to naturopathic school. The requirements for my school (Sonoran University of Health Science) require certain sciences classes and other classes within 4 years of completing the classes. Obviously, each school is required different classes, so you must do research to apply into the school. As for Naturopathic medical school, it is usually 4 years of school, but it can be up to 6 years to graduate.
5. My plan in the next 5 years, I will be most likely practicing in U.S with other doctors in a share (group) clinic as well as volunteer in community health clinic and NGO.
6. As for the plan to go back in Kawthoolei will be dependent on the situation in the country. If it safe, I will be working with NGO to provide free medical consultation and treatment to the Karen and other ethnic group. I see myself working with Karen people mostly in Thailand/Myanmar border since there are a lot of Karen populations seek asylum in Thailand.
7. As for the advice, there are a lot however what stood out to me the most to achieve my goal to be naturopathic medical doctor are faith, hope, and perseverance.
a. I put my faith (as being a believer and follower of Jesus Christ I have experience miracles throughout my journey in pursuing knowledge, prayer is an ultimate way to go when I face difficulties)
b. Hope because when you put your mind and your heart into something you want to achieve and never lose your hope. There may be challenges that you have to face but having hope and trust in God (yourself) helps!
c. Perseverance because it is a key to keep you focus and let you to our goal.
