Stress Free Travel with Pastels: Tips for Flying with Pastels

So glad I saw this video - just one day before I left on a vacation! My daughter gifted me with a set of pastels for my birthday at our destination. I put the pastels in my carryon bag for the returned flight. Sure enough, my bag was inspected in my presence, and I explained what they were, in the original cellophane wrapping and the agent was satisfied with no further issues. OK, I was delayed a few minutes in security, but worth the inconvenience to have the pastels handled with care. Thanks for this great tip!

Excellent video, Karen (as always). May I add my experiences? I commiserate on the percentage of inspections; they occur about half of the time. I did experience fewer inspections after I put the photo of pastels on the side. I use the cover of a Sennelier La Carte pad, which is big and beautiful. Before that, it seemed like I got inspected 100% of the time! As a note: the pastels look not like bullets but they do look exactly like a bomb, with the plastic explosives wired in a series. Our pastel boxes are very susceptible to red flagging on the x-ray! When I travel on United, the new system seems to be the cheapest seats do not get a carry-on item - only a personal item (purse, briefcase). Probably other airlines are following suit. In this instance, I carry my Dakota box as the item. Carrying the attractive wooden box separately has the added advantage that my carry-on luggage, when I am allowed it, can be smaller than the max allowed size. This is also helpful when the overhead bins are smaller than normal (flying out of Spokane I am often on a Bombardier, and I think hopping into Albuquerque from some transfers can also be on a smaller plane). I'll add another advantage: if I ever have to curb check my carry on, then not having the pastels in there avoids the stress of handing that bag over to the baggage crew. Always some detail! Karen thank you! I'm so nervous about flying with all my supplies--so much so that I decided to pay for a ticket instead of flying non-rev (which I could have done). I am less worried about my pastels due to all the info you and others have given... But I'm unsure about the other supplies. I'm really looking forward to your video about other supplies!

@@KarenMargulis scissors are an obvious candidate for the checked luggage. But what about pencils, brushes, pencil sharpener, etc? And what have I forgotten to consider?
