"The proof is in the pudding" is what I remember my grandfather doing to the paddocks along the river that ran through the farm and they were always where the paddocks were exposed to flooding or swampy wet areas we had a lot of. He never sprayed them coz it meant an expense that we could never afford and only budgeted for the never ending battle with gorse and ragwort. The time before we would pull the ragwort by hand of course and the amount of trailer loads was never a great fan of back then. The topping of the rushes made a difference and we also spread the cow manure/muck from the yard & piled onto a 8 x 6 ft wooden sled by hand which was a lot more fun than pulling & dumping ragwort. It cracks me up with the similarities ur going thru. Crazy. Well I'm pretty much immune to those fond memories now (Not!) so I know exactly what ur going through but I'm living proof ur on the right track and if it's evidence they want from me then they need to go up to the "Pearly Gates" and ask for me grandparents. Otherwise they'll just have to get over it yeh. Keep going Karen. Ur on the right track. They can't acknowledge what they have never tried/experienced yeh. Good luck.

The cows help break up the soil with their hoofs which in turn helps the grass come up. Topping helps the soil retain moisture which in turn makes the grass grow. Mother Nature is amazing at making things grow. Keep up the great work with the farm and you are a great representation for farmers ❤

Karen, it is good the tractor does not have serious oil problems. The fields looks great after you topped the rushes and grass. Topping and applying muck seems to make the grasses really thrive. You are a good manager of your fields. Blessings to you.
@Andy-ix2ox Жыл бұрын
Topping is regenerative a lot of people don’t appreciate that, if you keep at it you will eventually see the weeds die off, it’s a slow process and will take years but the best part of it is that the place looks like someone owns it.

Hi Karen, Grant from NZ here. I agree 100% topping and harrowing is a great pastime in retirement. I'm a great believer in both , I brought a rundown dairy farm, and the benefit of both these activities improve the pastures and will kill most weeds over time. Cattle learn to eat the young weeds if slightly pressured allowing the young grasses and clovers to move into the gaps. Keep it up.
@karenmoynihanfarm Жыл бұрын
Yes I have seen the same thing here. They'll often pick at the young rushes
@Fireman9ify Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right about topping the rushes, it promotes grass growth. A small quad sprayer on the gator and spot spray the rushes only uses small amounts of chemicals. Lime helps enormously with rushes, and of course drainage. Bit by bit is the answer, the spraying course is very straight forward, used to be 250 euro, i knew less than you when i did it. Great stuff Karen, farming is a long long long term plan. Do what you can and dont put too much pressure on yourself, the jobs get done eventually.

Topping rushes is the most cost effective way to get rid of them because sprays are so ineffective on them, give it a few years and they will be lots extra grass. 10 years ago on Scottish farming forums I read lots of debates when a good weedkiller for them was banned on best way to get rid of them, and popular way were topping, digging them out or ploughing and reseeding (still have to top and spreads them but come back a lot thinner)

Very well explained on the topping but the way KZbin works you’ll still get comments. You just need to put the link to this video… Part of what you are doing is improving the soil and topping helps with that more than sprays. There will be plenty of seeds already down on the ground to boot. Not to say spraying can’t be effective but just throwing spray at it without improving the soil structure, I’d have my doubts.
@JimF500 Жыл бұрын
Its good for my OCD watching someone do the topping😆. I hope your dad and Rob get on because you dont want to come back to find his head jammed in some railing😃................by the way if the seal is leaking from the flywheel side, the oil may eventually find its way onto the clutch, but it may be at the pulley side.

I do know that as of 12/31/23 slash 1/1/24 we will not be able to buy Roundup off the shelfs like from a Home Depot or Lowes anylonger. You have to have a Farm a lot bigger than mine to be able to purchase it. It all has to do with the Big Lawsuit that the makers of Roundup are in from the CancerLitigations going on right now. Hi Karen. Don't bother listening all the smart arses. You do what work's on YOUR farm. What work's for you might not work for me, and vice-versa. To control rushes I would recommend soil sampling, it's probably the cheapest and most cost effective way to know what your land needs. Bloody good effort as always 🫡. Look after yourself.
