Hi Karen, do you have to stretch watercolour paper before doing a painting on it? If yes, could you possibly do a tutorial on it? Also, give more advice on the best paper to use. Love you work, you make it look so easy. Many thanks.
@KarenRiceArt3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question Gerald. I don't often stretch my paper. I made a little video about the materials I use and the paper section is about 6 minutes in. I hope you find it helpful. But just to say I use 300gm watercolour paper on block no larger than 14 x 10 inches. Otherwise I go for heavier paper... kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJnUi5Sfrdh-baM

Sorry about that Francie... I have better equipment now... this is one of my earlier videos. 3 things you can do .... Go to the bottom of the video screen, there is a volume dial there, push it up to the top. If that does not improve the sound. You can click CC on the bottom right of the video screen for subtitles. Lastly... just below the video on the right you will see 3 dots... it opens up the transcript for the video. Hope this was helpful :)

Love your style, love your art! How beautiful. When you do each piece can you mention the type of paper you use thickness and the number of the brushes that would help. I am just starting water colouring and I love it so far. I have done 11 paintings of flowers not yours but I love your technique and I love landscapes. I am going to attempt to do your art pieces. I feel if I watch them over and over again before I start helps me to pick up the technique much easier than cold turkey. Would you say that is a good idea? my problem is keeping the background wet enough . Can you advise me on that? thank you

Thank you for your lovely comments and questions. I usually use 300 g paper with a not or rough surface. Details about the materials I use in the videos are in the description below the video. My advice is to practice practice and practice some more! Hope this was helpful, happy painting :-)

Hi Karen, thanks for your videos! Maybe I am using the wrong kind of gummed kraft paper tape, but I couldn't get it off when I was finished. How do you remove it? Joanne
@KarenRiceArt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joanne, thank you! I use framing tape which is just like masking tape, but not so harsh on watercolour paper, you stick it on without wetting it. It's great for achieving a white/light border. It sounds like you are using gummed tape, which you wet and use to stretch paper. Once you apply this to watercolour paper it is very difficult to remove. If I use it to stretch paper, I trim it off afterwards. Hope this was helpful :)
@joannelennie11503 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Karen! I'll try the framing tape. I am using the gummed stuff now, it's very tough to get off as you say. Do you stretch your paper 1st usually?
@KarenRiceArt3 жыл бұрын
@@joannelennie1150 I haven't used gummed tape in years, as I use 300gms + watercolour paper on a block, it doesn't need to be stretched. I paint so often, not stretching the paper just gives me more time. You are not supposed to removed it from the paper. Just trim it off when you finish your painting. Hope this was helpful :)

The painting seemed to change quite a bit from 9:44 and 9:45, particularly the foliage at the bottom. Did you use something like a credit card to lift some of the color on the leaves? There also seems to be some differences in color, like you added more varying shades. Wish I could see how you did it. It seems like that part made a big difference in the foliage at the bottom of making it look real.
@KarenRiceArt3 жыл бұрын
You are right it is different. It has been a while ago since I painted it, but I believe I used a plastic card to lift off the paint...This video may help you, I used alot of the same techniques: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zn7KYaaveL-Mbbc 😊

Did you add white in the foreground at the end?
@KarenRiceArt4 жыл бұрын
I didn't add any white, I think it's the effect of the salt and scraping with the card that has brought the white of the paper forward. Hope this was helpful :)

When you are using paper on a board with tape on the sides, is the paper wetted first or do you just paint onto it dry? I’m always confused about papers, stretching etc. Have you done a vid on paper and whether it needs to be stretched and or taped?

Your kidding id load more color on the flowers especially using seasalt or try using brusho special effects powders.
@lynne-t7o3 ай бұрын
You misspoke when you said salt is removing paint. Salt removes water and the paint pigment deposition is altered by the water removal. This is exactly why the wet paint reacts more than the damp and dry hardly reacts. And this is exactly why you can "reconstitute" some by adding water in if the pigment will resuspend off the paper. Different salts produce different effects in part due to their shape differences --sea salt is flake and table salt is fine cube. But there is also a chemical difference among salts because of trace mineral components which can literally chemically interact with the paint pigments. Table salt is highly refined so traces are removed and the usually iodine is added. Many sea salts are not highly refined. Here's a quiz--what makes Himalayan salt pink in color?
