Sigfrid Karg-Elert's 'Nun Danket Alle Gott' is one of the most popular organ pieces, and is also based on one of the most popular Chorales.... but where is it?!
Let me know if you can sing along to it!!
This is the organ of St Maria in Landau (Germany), sampled for Hauptwerk by Piotr Grabowski available from www.beautyinso...

Which piece are you going to chuck into the ‘are you sure it’s based on that’ category?

Bach's Chorale Prelude on Nun' Komm der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659 (the one with the ornamented solo). It's very beautiful, but the theme is practically lost in the ornamentation.

As I said in another comment. Some of the large Reger Chorales. He hides the melody in the inner voices

In the score of this from which I play, the hymn tune is noted, so although you can't hear it explicitly, you can see it in the score...and it's there somewhere! Really enjoyed this performance, thank you so much!

First line: D D D E E D… (and similarly elsewhere). Some chorale-based compositions (of a later period) only use fragments of the chorale - enough for those Lutherans/Reformed to be able to identify it.

I grew up in a church where Nun danket was sung - can pick bits of the tune out from Karg-Elert's wonderful and imaginative 'takeoff' but it is quite well embellished. Superb playing as always. but envy you for having a four-manual and very well appointed console and reproduction equipment apparently in your living room! Outstanding sound reproduction and videography - more to envy!

@@TimvanElderen Now, if I had that available to me back in the day, I could have kept practicing instead of being organ dead after 30+ years. 😒 I bet when he pulls the 32's that the neighborhood says that a 5.0 tremor came through the area. 🤪

Well, it's clearly not made for a sing-along, but the melody is very neatly transformed into the triumphal march style, and especially the second line of the melody is so distinct and famous that it is clearly audible in this composition. I like it a lot, and will try it myself. (Karg-Elert is the composer Reger could have been if he had liked music...)

I could not detect the tune I am afraid. But as to think of other titles: how about the Reger chorale fantasia’s especially the last one (Hallelujah Gott zu Loben). An acquaintance of mine plays that one, its amazing, but the tune is often hidden in the middle voices. Thank goodness this acquaintance also wrote a 150 page book dissecting all all the Reger chorale fantasias!

What do you mean hidden? lol the repeated refrain “and ever present peace” to guide us on our way shouts out Now thank we all our God. One of my favourite all time pieces to play as a postlude. I want it played with gusto as I’m wheeled out of the church and into the hearse!

Having learned this my first year of organ studies, it has long been a favorite. So yes, I know where K-E “interpretably” placed the melody within it. And no, I’ll pass on sending you a vocal recording to accompany you. LOL I played it my first Thanksgiving at the first church I was serving, where Van Cliburn’s mother had recently retired from being the organist. She was home from NYC for the holidays and she loved it too.

Ah, thanks for the Karg-Elert even if it's that one but I do like the way you play it. Any chance of another from Opus 65 - there are many unknown gems in there. Also have a look at Partita Retrospettiva Op.151 especially mvt. 2 Dialogo. Beautiful.

I would add my favourite piece of J.S.Bach's organ works, BWV 659. Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, which I think is pretty far removed from the basic chorale melody and harmony!

Another one for you to try is Max Reger's "Halleluja! Gott zu loben, bleibe meine Seelenfreud' that is based off a chorale and the hymn is virtually not that well known other than Max Reger's Op 52, 3 of it
