I really like the fact that the movement in the Observatoire comes from the era when mechanical watches where actually the one and only option, so you somehow get a feeling of satisfaction wearing the watch that you simply can not get with any new movement. Philippe Dufour is incredible as well, Simplicity is a gorgeous watch. I actually wouldn't know which one to choose, probably would go with the Observatory...

That's the first time I've seen the correct Roman IV used and I restored dials for a living for many years. Also the IV and VII being upside down to the normal would drive me and my OCD nuts. Lovely watch thanks for sharing.

Darn, my old age pension can not cover the cost. Glad you have not told me how much ! As a Watch stunning, i would buy it in a minute if I had the Money. The closest I can com is my vintage 1961 Seiko skyliner 36 mm and a 34 mm dial . Simple and still lovely to look at. Seikosha 402 movement.

how do brands like voutilainen and philippe dufour compare in terms of quality, durability and time keeping to the big ones like patek philippe, vacheron constatin and audemars piguet? may be a very stupid questions but I'm quite new to this wonderful world, thanks.

independent watchmakers seem to tend to build non-automatic watches.. is there any reason?
@admiralnasty
@admiralnasty 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the watchmaker. Those who are more avant garde don't follow that rule but more traditional watchmakers such as Kari generally will. Automatics as a rule of thumb are generally more complicated than manual winds, if you exclude additional complications. So without the need for a winding rotor the entire movement can be viewed, to showcase the quality of the finishing. When you get into really expensive watches, ones that won't get that much wear, the convenience of an automatic movement becomes less important. And for me personally the weight of a rotor moving around while you're wearing it is not pleasant, so it is less elegant in that regard. But i'm sure there are endless other reasons.

I know these are hand made, hence the 80K price range, are there any watches similar to this with in the 5K range? Like say for example the Ophion Velos salmon which is around 3K and is almost as nice as this one with the tear drop lugs & dial finish. Please if any one have any idea let me know.

It's a staggeringly beautiful watch. Obviously a once in a lifetime purchase. I think you could have easily made that point without the constant statements about how much better than a simplicity it is. A completely different but in its own right an equally staggering timepiece. Just my 2 cents. Still enjoyed viewing a watch I'll never own. Sam

hi. i find your comparaison with Dufour inappropriate and i hope not disrespectfull. Dufour is working alone in a relatively small and simple workspace. There is many hands on a Voutilainen watch. And also a Voutilainen is hand made yes, with some very complex and costly machines for some parts. There is no secrets.
@TickTocking
@TickTocking 4 жыл бұрын
Dufour does not work alone except when he could not find people to work with him. And the almost none parts are created in his small work space
@gautier5136
@gautier5136 4 жыл бұрын
@@TickTocking Most of the time, Dufour is working alone. Just because working with him seems to be very difficult. There's were is the main difference with Voutilainen. It's not the same type of production, at all. Dufour's production is much more simple and close from the idea of an humble craftmanship from the past in the "vallée de joux" . This doesn't take anything out of the fantastic job of Kari Voutilainen.
@base924
@base924 4 жыл бұрын
@@gautier5136 Dufour is the master of finishing and looking at the caseback is pure magic. The production of the Simplicity goes through a lot of different hands. The case, dial and movement parts are cnc made outside of his atelier. He does much of the finishing and assembly himself, but he has helpers, or had anyway, with production of the Simplicity. Even Roger Smith has a team of around 10 persons all in all working for him including state of the art CNC machine. There still are a few independents around making a handfull pieces a year (Max) without the use of CNC and with only a couple people involved. The total time spent on any of the pieces from Dufour, Voutilainen, Greubel and Roger Smith are very high compared to any manufacture making more than perhaps a 100 pieces a year.

Really nice watch. However I am disappointed with the assebly screws on the movement and the ones holding the caseback. The movement screws are all missaligned and some are in a Geneve pattern and it looks messy. The caseback screws. Are also all missaligned.
