Lovely Family Video, but to someone who knows what is going on it is heart breaking. Wikipedia is incorrect. Look around. There is no water catchment other than the highly polluted run-off from the freeway in an extreme weather event (not seen one in twenty years) The lake was filled with ground water pumped from a bore near Henry Street (500 meters away). This is why the water is such good quality (trout, Murray Cod and other game fish are stocked). The surface level should be one meter higher than it is now (see the boat ramp high and dry!) Many of the waterside trails should be three feet underwater. There should be resident and migratory birds nesting and feeding. On the north shore particularly, the lakeside wetlands have been destroyed and the shallows have been drained. Regular bird surveys conducted by experienced members of Birdlife Australia count only 40 species (not 145 a shown on 10-year-old publications). Why has this happened? It is apparent the Parks Victoria have taken a policy decision not to replenish the lake water from the bore. It is apparent that heir policy is to allow the park to degrade to the extent that it fits with their budget to maintain. Parks Victoria originally held a license to extract ground water to fill the lake (70ML per annum) but the lake has not been full since 2005. The engineers who designed and built the lake estimated it would take 70 ML pre annum to maintain the optimum surface level to support the wetland and shallows habitat. We have been given excuse after excuse why bore water has not been pumped to the lake (problems with the bore, electrical issues etc). We have come to the realization that the license has been traded (for cash). Of course Parks Victoria will not comment, but a 'Freedom of Information' request lodged with Southern Rural Water will soon confirm this one way or the other. It is interesting to note that Parks Victoria allowed 100% of local ranger staff (who cared for the park) to retire all at one time before replacements were brought in (those that didn't retire were transferred elsewhere). It seems Parks Victoria did not want the new crew of rangers to pick up bad habits - like caring for Karkarook Park. Spread the word - raise our voices!
