Thank you for this. In my teens in the 1980s I started seeking out every short story of Karl’s I could find (I’m a big fan of the shorter forms). He, along with Lin Carter and Dennis Etchison, was a masterly writer at his best. A prose poet really.

Oh, I agree. KEW was spectacular, especially his early prose. He is sorely missed.

Couldn't agree more! Wagner was a beast. When he was at the top of his game, he stood toe to toe with anyone.

Awesome video. Subscribed. Frazetta paintings is what got me into collecting (eventually reading a few) paperbacks as well. Have yet to find anything from Karl Wagner yet, the stories sound great though.

I stumbled on a volume of his Kane stories in a charity shop six months ago. I'm a huge fan of Howard, CL Moore, that earlier era of weird fiction, but I'd never heard of Wagner. The stories were entertaining and deeply disturbing in equal measure. It's a shame most of his stuff is OP, all the old paperbacks are well out of my price range.

In a Lonely Place is affordable and well worth it.

Nice video. Here in England the Kane books had different covers, painted by Chris Achilleos ( 'Nightwinds' and 'Darkness Weaves'), and Les Edwards ('Bloodstone'). I'm not sure who did 'Dark Crusade' or 'Death Angel's Shadow'. I read in the recent 'Phantasmagoria' special on Wagner that he bought the original painting for 'Darkness Weaves' from the artist. I very much hope that Valancourt will publish another volume of Wagner's horror stories, it is a terrible shame that so much of his work is out of print.

Wagner's needs to be heard. Admittedly, his later works suffered, but there was a period there where everything he wrote was pure fire.
