I really do feel like sometimes Karl can be an accidental genius. He has a point, the ear (well, more specifically the brain) is always listening and interested in everything because we are curious by nature, we learn from what we see and hear, if you're in a new environment, everything seems louder because your brain is taking in this new world, to your brain, you could be in a possibly dangerous situation!

@henrylivingstone28005 жыл бұрын
He has a point with the birds trying to sound louder than their environment, in locales with cicadas the cicadas will cry louder than the surrounding noise to attract mates and with the increasing amount of noise pollution animals are having to make louder noises

source of the humor. It shouldn't piss you off, because if that dynamic wasn't there, the trio wouldn't play off one another like they do, & it likely wouldn't be very funny. Just FYI, chimps do NOT have opposable thumbs. They have appositional thumbs, which means the thumb has similar placement as human thumbs, yet they do not have the rotational capability of a true opposable thumbs. To put it more simply, their thumbs are more like toes, lacking 2 very important muscles the human thumb has.
@ItsADaft11 жыл бұрын
I think it's likely that the setup's something they've agreed upon beforehand, that Karl is the foil, kind of like Alan Davies is on QI; Ricky and Steve are the guys you laugh with, Karl is the guy you laugh at. But at the same time, I do agree that they occasionally push the bit too hard--they start mocking something that's actually sensible and the whole thing kind of falls apart for me.
@Zorak95956 жыл бұрын
They were pushing his buttons long before any agreement was made... In fact, they did make several agreements after they pushed Karl too far. Ricky actually had to agree, as a criteria for their continued working together, to limit the amount of times he squeezed Karl's head on Saturdays. Not even kidding. Listen to the XFM broadcasts, it's all there. For anyone that is unsure of Karl's authenticity, XFM is the thing that will convince you.

@WallKenshiro4 жыл бұрын
And he comes from Manchester, and often resides in London. Both places noisy as f'k with constant traffic etc. So he's either 100% right, or is unaware that he's describing the brains tendency to pay more attention to unfamiliar sights and sounds, thus appearing to notice them a lot more prolifically, especially when in unfamiliar environments. This is how it is with Karl. He's either totally onto something, or utterly confused and mistaken. There is no in between.

Karl is really funny. The thing about loud noise, being uncomfortable in new places and wanting to turn every noise and visual input off is part of being autistic. I don't go on holidays to loud places with lots of people, having aspergers myself, I go kayaking by myself or something.

or even with just Steve, it wouldn't be so funny after awhile. It's Ricky's needling & bullying that keeps the whole thing alive. I'm not trying to discredit Karl at all...Ricky didn't "create" Karl, he merely found him & shoved him into the spotlight. But, on their own, Steve & Ricky are both hilarious as solo stand-up artists. In these earlier XFM shows, Ricky was more abrasive towards Karl, but like I said Ricky knows what he's doing & what he sounds like, therein lies much of the humor.

Well Karl... it is not that you close your eyes and see nothing, you see your inner eyelids, it is dark but you are still seeing, it is to shift what you want to sense that youre thinking about. Same with ears, cou cover them but you are still hearing. The question comes when asking yourself: What do I want to sense (see/hear/etc.)? Do you preffer the sound of a baby screaming in a plane or to hear your heartbeat.

The terms even amongst professionals are still debatable. I'm no professional. If just talking about the thumb placement, then yeah the thumb is, technically, oppositional. What chimps lack is the rotational capability, like I said, they're more like toes (not sure if the toes are considered 'opposable' on chimps). Not worth debating at any rate, there's no solid 100% agreed upon definition. Ricky IS quite abrasive at times, but in my opinion, if Karl was just sitting there talking solo,

To ricky gervais: The reason Karl says he hears his heart with earplugs is because the eardrum picks up the sound of blood flow through the ear when other sounds are drowned out. He doesn't literally hear his heart, he hears his bloodflow. So don't be so quick to mock Karl if you have no knowledge of something.
@DJFlare846 жыл бұрын

@92ospe113 жыл бұрын
That's the thing tho. They are trying to explain to Karl that he is closing his eyes subconciously. Not that the eyes themselves have some sort of brain that makes decisions.
