One thing you get with Stockhausen you don't usually get from others in this genre is humor.

I haven't heard much from Stockhausen but this is one of my favorites I've heard from him. Was wondering what other compositions are similar.

Your description of beauty would be interesting to hear. This is the Oxford English dictionary's definition of it: "a combination of all qualities of a person or thing that delight the senses and mind" Does this piece really achieve that? Tell us.

Contradistinctively, Keith Gifford, I believe that Stockhausen makes the case that Humanity is a lot greater than it can imagine. I should know. I was on the mission to transport him from his planet orbiting Sirius to take him to Earth. I think I was about 8 or 9 at the time... hard to remember. We old CIA UFO pilots get a little confused about 5-dimensional Time when we are out of practice. What I do agree about is that I think Stockhausen is deeply condemning bigotry (in all its forms)... thus Humanity is guilty of this ultimate sin... unless we learn to accept differences in Others as being equally right. I think you took the overwhelming finale of the piece to be a total condemnation of Humanity... perhaps, instead, it is merely a warning, a presaging of Judgment, if we do not fully open our Minds.

Thanks for the comment. Wonderful writing. I love Stockhausen. With him, I never feel like I'm being conned with put-ons and cheap effects. It's all alive and fiercely original. This afternoon would be an excellent time to go out and stalk some more Stockhausen vinyl in the minuscule number of record shops left in Ann Arbor.

Oh, good, someone who can help me better understand Stockhausen and his music. I have several important questions. - Which Sirius is Stockhausen's home-planet's sun, Sirius A or B? Or is it that mysterious predicted 3rd star in the system which is causing irregularities in the Sirius' orbits observable since 1984? - What's Stockhausen's world like? (Particularly the composition and pressure of the atmosphere, it's density, and its mass and temperatures.) - What is the planet's name? I want a complete list of names from all of the major intelligent cultures, and our Earthling's scientific designation. - What kind of transportation did you use to get to and from Earth? Was this the planned solar wind propulsion expedition, or did you use a more antimatter based method(warp drive)? - How old are you now? If you were 8 or 9 when you left earth, then by the end of the 90-year round trip, you would be around 100(unless you were born a decade before the return mission, in which case you would be in your 50s). - How did they keep Stockhausen alive when you arrived back on Earth? Assuming his planet has different gravity, our gravity would effect his cardiac and skeletal systems greatly. Did he feel heavier or lighter when he arrived? - What was his initial reaction to "Erdmusik"? Also, why did he learn to communicate in German, and not something more global, like English or Spanish? - Did you or anyone else on that mission utter the phrase "Beam me up, Stocky" before Tom Service used it? Please answer each question with accurate and precise detail. I need a scientifically documented report! :)

No worries, @@NicholasMeyler. I read the post and made myself fully aware of the nature of the comment before replying. I ask all questions out of genuine curiosity, and (of course) for scientific research. You see, there are rumors going around that Stockhausen was not a Siriusian, but rather a human who composed badly. Obviously, this is not the case, but I need to gather evidence to disprove this rumor, and asking questions is the best way to learn information I don't know. I'm assuming you didn't understand some of the questions I asked(either contextually or factually), and I will gladly ask them in broader terms if you wish.

***** I agree. Stockhausen was my first exposure to this kind of 20th century classical music. I first heard pieces like Etude and Kontakte and I was fascinated. Then I got into composers like Milton Babbitt, Iannis Xenakis, Charles Wuorinen, etc. Before I knew it I was hooked.
